fastest drive to secure rip with eac

For some odd reasons my Plexor PX880SA has never worked properly and i have had loads of troubles opening the cd tray (ie. when i click the button it doesnt eject) in the first months it simply ejected after 10 to 15 times i clicked the button but now it totally died. Even using plexutils it says me fail at the tray open test. I dont have time to send it back and replace it in warranty (shipping would cost more than buying a new one so i will simply trash it).

Now i want to buy a new unit that is sata and that rips FAST in secure mode.
Does anyone know of any drive that can go i dunno up to 6X in secure mode producing perfect rips?
I need to rip somethign like 4000 cd (my entire colelction of originals) and so i want something that can deliver really FAST, even faster than 6 would be better. I only care that is all CRC ok and thats it.

Hope you guys can advice me well.
I use Win 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

"Perfect rips" I don't think can always be achieved, etc., however my Sony/Optiarc DVDRW drive rips rather fast but also doesn't recognise a few commercial audio CDs I have from the 1980s.

I'd say if you want "perfect rips" get two drives, two completely different brands at that since they're inexpensive enough these days.

Even faster if AccurateRip utilised for checking out the rips.

I know i can do that in burst mode but that has bigger error results, sometimes it goes out of sync and is not as reliable as secure.
In the past i had a drive who made secure rips at 6x or evn 8x but since i changed i duno 20 drives in 15 years i dont really recall which brand was.
i usually burn 2000 cdr/dvdr a year so my drives dont last that long.

Anyway I will think about a sony, i had one before and it was a good unit indeed. any specific model someone wants to suggest though?

If speed is the most important aspect for you, have you considered to use dbpoweramp instead of EAC? It uses another (in most cases faster) algorithm when ripping: first it tries to rip in burst mode and stops if this burst-mode rip can be verified against AccurateRip. So in that case it doesn't read sectors/the whole CD more than once. Furthermore, multi core encoding will also speed up the ripping process.

I have a Lite-On iHAS324-04, and from my quick test I found that it's quite fast and quite accurate in secure mode, and probably the best of all I have in secure mode, probably faster than the Samsung SH-162L that I use for ripping. In general, I found that drive based on the MediaTek chipset give you the best compromise in secure mode, and I also like the fact that their offset is so small. In burst mode, however, my PX-230 is the best drive I have (but the PX-230 is pathetic in secure mode and it has a big offset).

CDRLabs is one of the few site that test secure mode for accuracy, however they do it with CD-R, not with pressed CDs. Check the section about DAE, bottom of the page.

Note that my philosophy is that two drives with different chipsets are better than one. I use my SH-162L for ripping and if I don't get a AccurateRip hit, it test it in the PX-230 and let EAC compare the checksums.

P.S. : The new iHAS324-98 are not MediaTek based, but NEC based. I believe one of the sure way to get a drive with a MediaTek chipset is to get a iHAS424 or iHAS524. Check CDfreaks forums for confirmation.

But if you use AccurateRip you can do Burst and only Secure if it didn't rip correctly. I'm not sure why you'd want to secure rip every time any more.

I've had a few Lite-Ons, both CD-RW, DVD-RW and BD-R. I've been more than happy with ALL of them. Compared to other drives I've tried in the past, like NEC and some built-in laptop drives (usually LG I think), they are really fast in burst-mode and yet really accurate. When I have a problematic disk, they rarely disappoint me. In such case they are usually able to rip disks accurately (according to AR) when the speed is limited, whereas other drives often gives up.
Can't wait for a HD-AAC encoder :P

thanks for all the hints! i decided to contact plextor anyway and i will get it replaced but i will get another drive so it seems that everyone suggests lite on. i will do try it.

I have Optiarc AD-5260S and it rips well above 20x in secure mode with EAC. It's also super fast at gap detection and manages to give consistent results on copy protected audio CDs.
