M-Audio Audiophile USB Voice Recording Problem

I'm stumped.

I cannot get my microphone to work with my M-Audio Audiophile USB sound card.

I have a logitech mic, which is connected into the analog left input jack of my Audiophile USB. In Windows Sounds/Audio devices, I have the default recording device set to the Audiophile's analog input. In the Audiophile's control panel, I have the analog input enabled.

I initially tried recording in Sound Forge. When that didn't work, I tried Window's Sound Recorder. Neither pick up any sound. I'm almost positive I have the settings correct, so I am at a loss.

I also tried the mic on my laptop, where Sound Recorded worked perfectly, so it isn't a bad mic.

Any ideas?

This soundcard has no microphone preamplifier. Microphones require a preamplifier.

Gaming cards, such as those from Creative, have built-in microphone preamps that will function with simple dynamic microphnes, but these still require a microphone preamplifier (plugged into the line-in, not the card's mic-in) for any kind of quality microphone. Some professinal soundcards include professional microphone premaps, and cost accordingly, other require a separate microphone preamp to be used.

Logitech makes cheap USB microphones that are good for most voice use. I would get one of these. It will be cheaper than any preamp you can find.

USB microphones are very limited. There are legitimate uses for them, but be sure you don't need to do anything beyond speak into the microphone and have it recorded -- anything.

I don't suppose in Windows mixer that the mic has a 'advanced option' where you can select 'microphone boost'? Should raise volume by 20 dB.

That's right.

I've been using this...

Which is OK, but the levels can be too high for the sound card.

You can spend as much or as little as you want. Even with something basic like the above plugged into the audiophile, the quality is better than you get with a "normal" sound card with integrated pre-amp.

Because the audiophile doesn't have a mic input, there isn't a +20dB setting hidden under an "advanced" tab anywhere.

Cheers,
David.

Funny thing.

I realized that I needed a preamp not long after leaving this post.

Luckily, my father was a professional musician for 20 years. He had more than a few lying around, plus some studio grade microphones. I'm all set.

I wanted to thank you guys for the responses though. I appreciate it.

I actually have the Audiophile FireWire, I don't know why I wrote that  Must be too used to my other sound cards.
