i did not test it, but i *expect* ogg to be better at this bitrate. aside of quality there are several other reasons why i would favor ogg, like: better player support (far as i know mp3pro is "only" supported through winamp2 plugin, musicmatch and some managing/burning etc. suites like mymp3pro and nero, while ogg is supported in allmost any player out there today), ogg is free of any licensing troubles, ogg is cross platform and ogg has a good tagging system (which is also supported by many tagging tools today).

ps: mp3pro is also "downward compatible" which i see as a downside, because it leads to confusion.

Me neither ... but I'd say mp3pro @ 96kbit is way better than ogg - of course only if you use some mp3pro decoder and not regular mp3 decoder

Other than that I can only agree with ilikedirtthe2nd

I have only about a year old mp3pro encoder from Thompson. It supports only cbr, don't know if there's an mp3pro encoder with vbr support.

This could be quite important, especially if you encode a track that contains some silence or some area with "simple" sound.

Modern mp3pro encoder are VBR. MusicMatch Jukebox, CoolEdit Pro v.2 ans Steinberg MyMp3PRO v.4 (not sure about this last, though).
