Nero AAC - Highest + Using with iTunes

It would be great to see Nero add something to its AAC Plug-In for generating instantly compatible files for use with iTunes and/or iPods.

I'm very interested in this also Jay. I would be willing to pay for the Nero AAC plugin if this happened but for right now, its just way too much work to convert a Nero AAC to play on iTunes especially if you have a crapload of AAC songs encoded with Nero AAC.

I would love to use Nero AAC for all my future rips, but I use both Macs and PC's so combatability is an issue for me.

These compatibility issues will be worked out as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, you don't.

You don't what?

Erm, get them to work natively in iTunes rather than through QuickTime. Maybe I should've elaborated on that

Er, yeah it does. Didn't you read the rest of my message(s)? After running my Nero VBR .MP4 files through QuickTime Pro, exported with audio set to "Pass through," they work like a charm in iTunes. I'm listening to a Nero encoded VBR with an average bit rate of 334kbps (Nero was set to "Ultra") at this very moment...

Yes, you can play any VBR AAC mp4 in iTunes using QuickTime. But if you change the extension to m4a and remove the QuickTime file type and creator from the file, iTunes will attempt to play them like it plays MP3s, with sound enhancer and less skippy audio. You can tell how it's loaded from Get Info > Summary > File Type. It should say either "AAC Audio file" or "QuickTime movie file".

Er, yeah you can. Once I've done the QuickTime Pro "pass through," the files work perfectly within iTunes. Read on...

As I said in my earlier message(s), the file's Creator and Type actually wind up having nothing to do with successfully using Nero's AAC files in iTunes. The file's extension, however, is important. If you take Nero's AAC file and change the extension from .mp4 to .m4a right away, you'll have an unplayable file. Leave it as .mp4, and it's playable with QuickTime and iTunes (where it will show up as a "QuickTime movie file"). All of this has already been spelled out in my message(s) above.

Yes, that's true. And after 1) running Nero's *.MP4 through QuickTime Pro with audio set to "pass through," and 2) changing your newly exported file's extension from .MP4 to .M4a, you'll have a file that works perfectly with iTunes. You don't have to use "Get Info," by the way, you can also just go to "View Options..." and put a checkmark next to "Kind." That will also tell you whether your files are considered "QuickTime movies" or "AAC audio files."

I say "considered," because there's no magic process here. iTunes is just using the file's extension to determine whether it's a "QuickTime movie" or an "AAC audio file." That, in fact, is where a lot of others are running into problems. Change your original Nero file's extension from .mp4 to .m4a, and iTunes will now report it as an "AAC audio file," but it's really not (at least not what Apple wants an AAC audio file to be), so the file will be unplayable. Click on "Play," and iTunes will just sit there.

Again, my Nero AAC files are now reported as "AAC audio files," everything else is reported correctly as well (Bit Rate, Sample Rate, etc.), and I'm also able to add album artwork (which you would not be able to do with a QuickTime movie file or a .WAV file). Everything works perfectly. No problems with using Sound Enhancer or Equalizer presets/changes either (although I always keep everything flat).

And, like I said, changing your file's Creator and Type appears to have no effect. I do change my completed files to "hook" and "M4A ," but only because I'm a nitpicker.

Regards,

Jay

Ok,  we didn't enroll in M4IF interoperability tests  for nothing

Amen to that!

I'd also give my right arm to the guy/gal who writes a Monkey's Audio (preferred) or FLAC plug-in for iTunes with support for tags and working album artwork!

I did as you described, and it worked! Now all I need is a PC to use Nero on until FAAC improves

Now to figure out why mp4creator MP4's are rejected...

Use Conectix VirtualPC

(Fast before Microsoft finishes acquiring it and stops selling the Mac version!)

Is this across the board that mp4creator MP4s are not working with iPods or has this been resolved?

Off-Topic:  PigsOnTheWing, great nick!  Btw, I'll be moving to Miami in a couple weeks.  Glad to know at least ONE person on this board lives near where I'll be staying
WARNING:  Changing of advanced parameters might degrade sound quality.  Modify them only if you are expirienced in audio compression!

Works perfectly if you have the right version or program.
