How to convert ISO to Flac ?

Hi all,

I have an ISO file of a DVD (DTS) that I can play with VLC but I would want to convert it to flac files.

Is there any "how to" on this available? My seraches were not so successful up to now.

Thanks for any hint!

Why do you want to convert DTS to FLAC?

I've never done exactly that...  I've "ripped" the audio from a DVD, but never from an ISO, and DTS only once...  I'm not sure if it can be done in a single-step, or with a single software tool.  So, I'll just give you some suggestions & hints to try to get you started.

If it was me, I'd start by burning a DVD.  ISO images are not really meant to be played or "opened".  They are intended for making duplicate discs...  You can use an R/W disc if you don't want to "waste" a disc.  Or, there are tools to mount the ISO image so that you can open the files/folders.

Then you can use a program like DVD Audio Extractor ($33 USD) extract/convert the audio (I don't know if this program supports DTS),  or PgcDemux (FREE!!!) to extract the DTS stream.  Then, you can use Foobar2000 (FREE!!!) or dbPoweramp (FREE - $36 USD) to convert to FLAC.

Or use a DVD ripper, or a program like VOB2MPG (FREE - $20 USD) to convert the VOB files to a single MPEG with DTS audio.  Then you should be able to open the audio directly with Audacity (FREE!!!) or another audio editor, and save-as FLAC.

Hey, thanks for the replies.

@dvdoug, I have used a tool (clonedrive) to mount the ISO, but with EAC I cannot see anything useful.

@lvqcl: For playing the songs trhu a streaming client (music only) and to convert intp MP3 for the less capable players.

So, seems I need to burn the disks?

Anyone has another idea / hint for me?

Thanks in advance!

Mount ISO, extract DTS track to a file (with SmartRipper or something similar).
Convert DTS to what you want.

EAC is for ripping CDs, not DVDs.

With Windows Explorer, you should see an AUDIO_TS folder and a VIDEO_TS folder.  (If you can "see" these folders, you shouldn't need to burn a disc.)

On a regular video-DVD, the AUDIO_TS folder is empty.

The audio & video are multiplexed together in VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder.  Since you have a DTS track (and DVD players are not required to play DTS) there also will be an LPCM and/or Dolby AC3 track(s), and possibly subtitles multiplexed with the MPEG-2 video.

You might be able to open the audio directly from the VOB file, but there are a couple of complications....  Your audio editor probably won't allow you to choose which format to open.    And, the VOB files are split into 1GB files.  The file-split is likely to be in the middle of a chapter, or in the middle of dialog, or in the middle of a song on a musical DVD, etc.

Some DVD copying/ripping programs will allow you to select one of the audio tracks, and some will allow you to combine the VOB files into one single VOB/MPEG-2 file.  But, these programs can usually also crack copy protection, and we don't discuss these "illegal" progams here.

I can think of just two

1) ability to tag

2) reduction in file size.

I would mount the ISO (e.g with virtual clone drive) extract the DTS file(s) (e.g. with DVD Audio extractor) , convert them to .dtswav (e.g. with Audiomuxer), compress them with flac (and optionally tag them).

Thanks to all for the help.

I can see the Folders and the VOB files. Seems I am a novice to ripping DVD files. So, I need to learn and download the software first.

At least you helped me to understand the procedure (a bit) and I will try. If I fail, I will come back and ask more questions (hopefully not).

Thanks again, guys!

And: Yes. I want to tag the songs and want to play them via tversity on my audio-streamers which requires conversion to flac (or wav).
