MSN messenger problem.

I have installed the latest version of msn messenger (5.0). After that, every day I have one or two pop-up advertisments even with the msn messenger close. Do you know any way of disabling that?

Are you sure that it's MSN that's causing the pop-ups? Did you install any other software that could could contain some kind of adware/spyware?
If the pop-ups keep coming even after MSN is closed, I think that it's likely that adware is the culprit. Run something like Ad-aware and get rid of anything it finds. Beware, though, some programs won't function if they see their adware isn't present (ie: DivX Pro[GAIN]).

One note: don't use MSN. Use a Jabber client and use a server with an MSN transport. That's what I've done and I've never been happier .

Hard work might not kill you, but why take any chances?

I have adware and there is no spyware in my machine.I will give jabber a try.
What is the best client for windows? I would like to support file transfer (with resume, if possible) and e-mail notifications.

Try PSI client - http://psi.affinix.com.
Don`t forget to copy SSL plugin (available on download page) - to enable SSL enryption.
Maybe try to translate PSI to Greek language  I updated translation file to Polish  Its quite easy.

If you want another client (e.g. you think that PSI sux), look there: http://www.jabberstudio.org/project/?cat=5

PS. MSN support in Jabber clients depends on server.

PS2. There is post about Jabber. Read from beginning.

By the time I saw the thread the solution had been "discovered"

It caught me last year when they started those stupid pop-ups; now they even sell lots of software which can get rid of these pop-ups - One of them was like $60 to do what takes <5min if you know what to do!

The big mistake is that MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger are not related to the Messenger service of Win2k, XP. That windows messenger service (its an actual service as opposed to a program like MSN Messenger) was meant to be used in a LAN setup so that an administrator could give notices to everyone about updates/reboots/etc. Then the scum of the internet pond found a way to hijack that service which is on by default in 2k and XP.

Since you know how to disable it - hopefully thats the end

You might however want an add-on to MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger called Messenger Plus

It has quite a lot of features including the ability to turn off the advertizing bar in MSN (or Windows) Messenger.

Edit: The add-on is free however if you really want a more powerful client then messenger or jabber then you check out Trillian
