Best way to convert stereo => mono?

Hiya

This is probably a really simple question, but at work I normally listen to music with just one headphone in so I can listen out for when people need to ask me stuff.. but i'm getting really fed up of only hearing one side of tunes that make heavy use of stereo.

The crappy onboard soundcard on my work pc doesn't have an option to downmix to mono, so not sure hows best to sort it. I've tried a simple stereo/mono adapter, but that didn't seem to work it just gave really poor sound. Might of been faulty though.

Anyone recommend anything? happy to slap in a new (but cheap) soundcard but finding ones that can output mono is rather tricky.

Is just a standard 3.5 mm stereo jack

Oh and just to add, I use a combination of foobar (already downmixes to mono using the DSP filter) and spotify/zune and maybe itunes in the future if they announce subscriptions... so I kind of need it system wide

What do you use to play music? Maybe it can do the downmix for you without resorting to hardware.
In Foobar, you would just activate the downmix DSP.

Lets me pipe sound through to a virtual driver in dvd quality, then from the line in select mono dvd quality and "listen" through a specific device. Works a treat and is system wide  Only problem is its not free!
