DTS wav to Mp3 - distorted/clipping

Hi all,

I am very new to file conversion.
A friend of mine has helped me to convert my brother's CD to DTS WAV format. I have a Sony walkman mp3 player and trying to converts those wav files into Mp3 using Winamp by following one of the tutorials on the net. When I played the Mp3s the sound is very distorted when the singer is hitting higher notes (not sure what the tech term for this). I tried using the Mp3gain to lower the volume but it did not work.

I'm just wondering if there is a way/ tutorials somewhere I can try which is going to be simple enough for a newbie like myself.

Thanks in advance.

It would probably be easier to just rerip the CDs directly to MP3.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, it will be easier to re-rip it from the CD but since the Cds are overseas at the moment my only option is to work with the Wav files unfortunately. I tried the AAC Mp3 converter software but the mp3 results are just a hissing sound no music at all.

Thanks

I assume the software expects normal WAV files, not DTS WAV.

Try foobar2000 in combination with the plugin foo_input_dts and the MP3 encoder LAME.

Thanks.

I'm a complete newbie, not familiar at all with all the terms and jargons.
so, any basic steps by steps guides would be much appreciated

Thanks

* Download/install foobar2000;
* Download foo_input_dts and drop the .dll file into foobar2000's components folder (should be in "C:\Program Files" or similar);
* Download LAME and unzip lame.exe to a folder of your choice;
* Start foobar2000 and load up (e.g. drag-and-drop) DTS-WAV files;
* Right-click files, select Convert, choose MP3 and your desired setting (only VBR and 320 kbps CBR are available by default);
* You'll be asked for the location of lame.exe, which you unzipped earlier;
* The files should now be converted.

For more info on these programs and terms, you could consult the Hydrogenaudio wiki, which has some good guides--or of course Wikipedia, Google, etc.

I'm back again.

I managed to get the conversion done but the sound is still clipping/crackling when it hits on high notes. I converted the files to MP3 320kbps 44kHz. Do I need to it in lower quality?

Thanks

How does the DTS-WAV sound when it's played in Foobar?
Who are you and how did you get in here ?

Lower quality, to make it sound better? Not likely to work!

I can't think of a reason that the MP3 encoding process would introduce the type of distortion that you describe. As AMED suggested, perhaps there is something afoot in the DTS-WAV files themselves. Or even the source CD(s): How many albums exhibit this problem?

Thanks for the replies.

I managed to get them converted using either AAC or Mp3 at full quality (had to lower the gain to -6) it seems to work bit better. I can hear very small parts of some songs.
Any further suggestions are really appreciated. I'm trying to get the best result of these DTS wav files for my Sony walkman A846.

Thanks again in advance to get me this far.

Is there any way that the DTS files ended up with more than 2 channels? I could not find the answer in this thread. It seems obvious that improper mixing of duplicate stereo pairs (LF+LR, RF+RR) causes clips very quickly! If not, some other element of the way DTS or any other multichannel pre-processing might be going on (i.e. plugin in chain that duplicates front channels to rear ones).

Yeah, I was gonna say. AFAIK pretty much the feature of DTS CDs (and DTS WAVs that come from ripping them) is to cram multichannel audio in the Redbook CD format.
