Kitaro - Ten Years 20 bit remaster

...and some remaster it is. I had a copy of the original from '88 on tape, and listened to it more than several times. Later in my life I decided to buy it, and the only available version was this "remaster". And mostly it sounds OK, louder than I remember, though, but one track is pushed beyond it's limits. It is louder than other tracks on CD 1, as if someone did normalization to -10 dB of the whole CD, but track by track, not looking into whole track loudnes, but only the first minute... it clips. Example is here.

What to do? I've been reading one thread about a plugin which reduces clipping, but I can't find it now for testing purposes. I'd buy original, but I can't find it at reasonable price here.

Any suggestion?

I've just figured out that ReLife is an all-pass (i.e. phase-shifing) filter, it does not do any change to the frequency response. It shifts phase at low frequencies.

So ReLife don't do anything useful.

Another plugin I remember seeing mentioned is iZotope RX's Declipper, but I haven't read anything on how effective it is.

Oh crap, iZotope RX is 350 bucks
And ReLife doesn't do anything, at least not for that sample.
Does someone has iZotope to try and process the sample and see if it removes clicking?

I didn't downloaded the Trial version, but I assume playing the processed file is possible.

"Trial Limitations: While operating in trial mode, saving will be disabled. iZotope RX is a standalone application and does not require any additional software."

I skipped that part. Thank you, I will try it myself.

That I didn't know; sorry for giving your wallet a fright! Personally, I doubt I'd pay that much for any software, especially for one track . . . if I had any money.

Would something like this be acceptable?

If it is, then you're only fortunate that the clipping wasn't too strong, because I've done that with Cool Edit Pro 2.1 which really screws up if clipping is too prominent. This was the procedure:
  • Open the sample in CEP2.1 and convert to 32-bit resolution.
  • Effects -> Noise reduction -> Clip restoration with these settings.
  • Normalise to 100% (L/R equally).
  • Effects -> Amplitude -> Hard limiting with these settings.
  • Normalise to 100% (L/R equally).
  • Convert to 16-bit resolution, triangular dithering of 1 bit depth with no noise shaping.
  • Save.

Thanks for the primer. Works fine in Audition 3.

Yes, the same procedure will also work with any version of Adobe Audition, because Adobe Audition is basically Cool Edit Pro 2.1 with some added functionalities in the newer versions.

I forgot to mention, Adobe Audition will also perform just as bad as Cool Edit Pro when the clipping is too strong, producing extreme overshoots in such cases.

What is the purpose of step 4?

Cool Edit tends to overshoot a bit even for relatively weak clipping.

A couple of other declipping tools:

Audacity (FREE!!!) has a Clip Fix "effect".  (I have 1.3.7 beta, which is not the latest.)

SeeDeclip[/color] (£15 - £25 GBP).

I have not tried either of these...

Thank you, yes, it is very acceptable.
No clicking noise at all on that sample (at least I can't hear them).
I will (when I have the time) head out to a friend, he has Adobe Audition, to declip the whole track.
In the mean time I am trying to locate the original CD from '88 to see what are the differences between the two...

Thank you all for your time.

I'm glad I could help.
