whats the best vbr mode with lame 3.98.4

i have used vbr new as i have read its the default mode for that lame version, but i have noticed static noise on the tracks like artifacts, shud i just use normal stereo or vbr old or a preset

use a preset.  -v2, -v1, -v5, whatever.  But if you're getting noticeable static on LAME rips of various CDs, not special problem samples, (no matter which switches you are using), something is terribly wrong on your end (unrelated to LAME).

does that mean i need to configure the cd drive

im using cdex 1.51 with lame 3.98.4 as cdex is very easy to get on with

quality - very high quality (q=0)
vbr method - vbr-new
vbr quality - vbr 0

sample rate - 44100

bitrate... 128 - 320

on the fly mp3 encoding - on

Set bitrate: 32..320

why 32 - 320

why 32 - 320

This is the default for VBR.

-b <bitrate>    specify minimum allowed bitrate, default  32 kbps
-B <bitrate>    specify maximum allowed bitrate, default 320 kbps

because:
1) 32-320 is default settings for LAME
2) 128-320 is a waste of bits.

i have done that. cheers

are the other settings i have given, the best for vbr files

VBR-new is default, so yes, it's generally considered "best". q0 has no effect in VBR-new, as values from 0-3 are equivalent. The V setting depends on the quality and file size you want. 44100 Hz is the sampling rate of CD audio, so that's right.

(I believe you have asked and received answers to very similar questions several times already, and been advised to read the Knowledgebase, etc. for such basic information.)

Considering you're asking questions about how to configure Lame, this doesn't really seem to be the case.

i suppose cdex is a bad programme to use then

i have tride cdpoweramp and eac but theyr too technical with lots of options, cdex is simple

end of the day, its bish bash bosh thats it

who wants to spend hours tweaking and testing millions of settings, id find that very un-enjoyable

I thought dBpowerAMP required less configuration than EAC, but anyway, users who want the guarantee of bit-perfect rips usually find the setup process to be a small investment.

Then why do you ask so many questions (and repeatedly) about LAME settings, particularly ones that are default/recommended (and for good reasons)?

because theyr the only settings that needed doing right, thats all, least i aint had to set up cd drives or crc check boxes or things like that, any way thanks

As far as HA recommended settings go, there are only one or two that are different from the default, so it's not even possible for dBpowerAMP to require much less.  If you want to set up either Lame or flac, just run the wizard (it configures the drive options as well).

I installed dBpowerAMP years ago and I am still configuring it.  The whole ordeal has been a nightmare.  I would rather just post in some forums regarding information I could have found in a 5 second Google search.

It took me all of 2 minutes to properly setup dBpowerAMP.  Any additional encoder simply involves a ~1MB download and use of a slider bar.  Yeah, that sound a lot harder than physically plugging in a minimum and maximum bitrate, worrying about unreported ripping errors, and bypassing the recommended settings.

I'm confused. Did it take 2 minutes or are you still configuring it?

I enjoy dBpoweramp a lot. Really like it.

Sarcasm mocking the TC.

Actual experience.

Yeah, that sound a lot harder than physically plugging in a minimum and maximum bitrate, worrying about unreported ripping errors, and bypassing the recommended settings.

Further mockage.

Still confused?

Unless the end-user already understands that nearly all of its default settings are wrong and adjusts them accordingly, yes.

It's not really any simpler if you've gone through the entire setup process required to achieve adequately clean rips.

Obviously not. That's why you're getting static clicks in your encodings.

If simplicity is the goal, Foobar2000 FTW!
