I'm frankly shocked, given the extensive research you appear to have done before posting this.

First, at the top of the general MP3 forum (which your topic was moved to, so I assume you didn't check initially) there is a pinned topic, which has a link to the recommended LAME settings page on the Knowledgebase, and a list (albeit maybe somewhat outdated) of some programs that can act as front-ends for LAME.

You may also find it useful to search previous topics, using the forum search engine or Google (which is also useful for finding information from other sources), as such questions have been asked many times. You can likely find answers for yourself, a more effective way to learn than others just walking you through it.

Finally, I trust that by "wav for archiving at best quality" you are not implying distrust of lossless formats. Sources like the Hydrogenaudio Knowledgebase and Wikipedia will help you learn about their benefits, chiefly reducing filesize while absolutely preserving the original audio, and also allowing much more flexibility in tagging--which, while possible in WAV and other uncompressed formats, is not widely supported. (How are your WAVs tagged; what programs do you use?)

Guys, Willey ask for some advice, not to be spanked. The easiest way to accomplish what you want is with foobar. There are some other programs like razorlame that you can use. In case that your new mp3 do not correct tags you can try mp3tag.

I don't use WMP, but if it stores tags in its library rather than the WAVs themselves, transferring them may be tricky. WMP does include an MP3 encoder, but I'm not aware of how it ranks compared to LAME, or if it can convert existing files. If you still want to rip with WMP, you could select Windows Media Lossless as your format and save disk space.

i have tried wma lossless but am not too worried about space just quality, anyway, if i just use foobar, is there any guides out there to show me how to set it up as its a complecated program to average beginners

As long as you're not implying that uncompressed audio is somehow of higher quality than lossless, I suppose that's fair enough, given modern disk capacities. However, as I said, if the WAVs themselves aren't tagged, that could be an issue.

Did you read the reply telling you to search the forum?

As was decribed earlier, your wav files almost certainly do not have tags so WMP has stored this information in a database.

If you want to use something other than WMP to convert to mp3, so that you can make use of the LAME encoder, but you also want to preserve the tag information when you convert, then probably your best bet is to first convert to WMA lossless  with WMP, which should properly tag the files, and then use any of the fine free applications that can convert from WMA lossless to LAME mp3.

Of course, having converted to WMA lossless I would immediately delete the wav files, unless you have some application that only works with wav and not lossless.

For foobar:  download and install foobar  then

a) get  lame at http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php

b) unzipit and copy the lame.exe in your foobar installation directory

c) Open foobar and go to file open, load a couple of wav files (just for testing purposes)

d) Once you have  the files on screen, select them, right click and choose convert and the three dots option

e) Choose the output format. You can find a couple of mp3 settings. Choose the one you like

f) Choose your output path

g) Choose your flie naming scheme

h) press ok, if the program ask you where is lame. exe you have to specify where  lame.exe resides

As you can see is not that difficult

If you feel uneasy with foobar try razorlame http://www.dors.de/razorlame/, check the documentation, is not rocket sciene

Cheers
