AAC to MP3, what parameters?

Hi all, this site is terrific.
I am a newbie and have a question: to legally download free music, I use youtube: I download the video, then strip the audio stream and transcode it to mp3, to hear it in my car stereo or in my portable mp3 player.
I know, I know: in this way I can only get crappy sound. But I'm not looking for hi-fi, just want to listen to songs when I'm not at home.
Now, my question is: as youtube audio streams are AAC 128kbps VBR, 44.1kHz 2ch, what parameters would fit the best to convert it to mp3? I tried mp3 v2 and it worked fine, but I think I am overdoing, right?

Thanks in advance!!!

He means that the material is copyrighted and you have no right to do what you are doing.

I don't quite get it: why on earth it is legal to upload a song, most often without a real video (e.g. a fixed image), and it is not to download it? If the material is copyrighted, then only the copyright owner should have the rights to publish it on the net.

Anyway, erase the whole message if you wish. The question is still: if I have an audio stream like that (AAC 128kbps VBR, 44.1kHz 2ch), what can be the best compromise to transcode it to mp3?

If the audio attached to the video is entirely the creation of the person doing the uploading (i.e. not only the performance but the music and lyrics) then he is within his rights to upload it (though I don't know what this implies for the rights to download it).

If the audio is in any part not his property then, as I understand it, YouTube needs the permission of the actual copyright holder to allow its downloading, which may be granted, usually along with links to purchase the track legally.

Any other use of this material is piracy, just like P2P sharing of copyrighted material.

Note: IANAL

You are very naïve if you think such videos are legal. The fact that YouTube have not (yet) removed material that breaches copyright laws is not permisison to use it as you wish.

Best answer to the original question is to conduct a double-blind test in order to pick which setting is right for you.

Regarding the legality, if the songs you're recording are subject to copyright then what you're doing may or may not be legal depending on the country in which you live.  Based on your IP address, it would appear that it isn't legal.

All that aside, your explaining how to do this in your first post is not exactly in accordance with our Terms of Service and as a result I am closing this discussion.
