Which drive to buy?

Right.. so I broke my samsung drive my sliding my chair in to the ejected tray.. now it's entirely unresponsive.

BUT I was overdue for a replacement, so what should I get?

I have these drives available to me;

Samsung WriteMaster SH-S223F (Sort)
Samsung SH-S223L (Sort)
Samsung SH-S223B (Sort)
Samsung Super-WriteMaster SH-S223Q

LiteOn iHAS324 (Sort)
LiteOn IHAS120
LiteOn DH-20A1S

LG GH22NS50 Super Multi (Sort)
LG GH22NS40 Super Multi

ASUS DRW 24B1ST

I'll be ripping using EAC in secure mode..
I'm leaning towards the samsung 223Q personally, but I'm looking for arguments for and against here. Secure ripping is paramount.

Thanks for any help you can provide, in advance.

I've not had good experiences with LiteOn drives, but have had some excellent Samsung drives.

The review at CDRLabs.com looks prety good for CD reads and does well with scratched discs. It reports C2 error information and doesn't cache audio, which I personally prefer.

I've never had an LG or an Asus drive as I've have been more than satified with the Samsung drives I've used. I'd choose one of the Sammys without Lightscribe as I don't need it and drives are usually cheaper without.

Hope that helps.

Aye, I tend to agree. I had a samsung drive previously, I am not unsatisfied because it broke due to physical abuse

I have Asus 2014S1T, SATA drive, and I am pleased with it. It works well, doesn't cache audio data according to EAC, and rips quite fast in secure mode, faster than LiteOns I had before. It has some built-in technologies to be as quiet as possible, and I like it for that. But it is not very good with ripping damaged disks, but I only threw at him two very badly damaged disks, which any of my 4 Plextors couldn't rip either, so it can be they were too damaged.

Or one of those commercial polishers?

I used to have one back in the day when I first ripped all my CDs...

Now it's all new CDs or digital downloads for me.
I'm the one in the picture, sitting on a giant cabbage in Mexico, circa 1978.

I'm a little surprised at the language.

well, no, because there is no Brasso here where I live, but the disk isn't physically damaged, no scratches - it is (was) one of my backup disks which I wanted to copy (because the originals are placed where I can't reach them easily), disk is clean as an mirror, but it is Princo, and it failed badly  well, for test I tried it in few other recorders, Sony, Plextor, well, disk is gone - I copied the original again.

Which brand can hold the heaviest beverage cup?

Both of my drives are liteon, vintage 2002.  Never a problem with the DVD read only.  The DVD+RW lately has occasional problems recognizing a disk but once properly mounted read/writes them fine.
