Mono vorbis files?

I'm going to bring the new Beatles mono releases for work listening. My work hard drive space is severely limited, so I usually encode music to -q 2 or 3 when I bring them in.

Is there anyway to tell Vorbis that the source is mono, or does it have a mechanism to pick it up automatically?

It will determine the number of channels in the input file automatically.

Sweet, thanks.

I know this isn't the proper forum, but does Lame do something similar? (I'll open a topic in the MP3 forum is the explanation is too in-depth).

If you have stereo file with mono content, you can use --downmix switch for oggenc2 and -m m for Lame.

On the other hand, if both channels are truly identical then joint stereo will take up only slightly more space than mono.

Are you sure they didn't try to create some kind of stereo effect from the mono tapes?

Remember, even when it's mono content, a standard music CD always has 2 channels.
So if you do want a mono (single channel) output file, you will need to downmix as lvqcl suggested.
