BenQ DW1655 works only under Windows XP

Does anyone know what might cause an optical unit to work flawlessly only under a certain operating system? I have an older BenQ DW1655 IDE burner that works perfectly fine under XP but under Windows Vista or 7, burning stops at random points, quality scans with CDSpeed or the new Opti Drive Control don't start or stop at random points, firmware updates are transmitted to the unit by the flasher but once rebooting, the old firmware is still present, etc. I tried both on an older computer with IDE controller and on a new notebook via USB to IDE bridge - both times exactly the same problem.

It seems like lots of subtle things changed with Vista and Windows 7, even more so if you are running either in 64 bit mode.

It seems like your problems start with the firmware updater. If you can't update the firmware, the problem could be the updater, or it could be that the same basic problem with the drive is causing trouble right here.

The firmware update problem could be due to the drive, the PC you are using for the update, or the OS.

Thing is, a new DVD burner will cost you about $35. It sounds like the old one has already had $35 worth of fun at your expense. You may want to store that old Benq in the round file and treat yourself to a new drive.

Problems didn't start with the firmware update. I attempted to do the firmware update because of the problems mentioned. Under Vista, the updater told me that the firmware was updated and I should restart but after I did so, the BIOS still reported the old firmware. Then I booted XP, did the firmware update and everything worked fine. I also downgraded and upgraded the firmware several times and it always worked flawlessly. Then I repeated this under Vista (32 bit) and nothing worked - the firmware always remained the same.

Did you try to klick the firmware updater with the right mousebutton to bring up the context menu and select "Start as Administrator"?
