Bit Perfect Output with Windows Vista

Dear All,

I hope this topicl doesn't annoy. I know it's been done to death and I think Microsoft have even been involved on some forums, but there does not appear to be any definitve answer.

I am building an HTPC having just sold a Mac Mini (the lack of BD support annoyed me) and, using Vista, I'd like to achieve a bit perfect output via the SPDIF output.

Connecting using a Toslink cable this will feed into my AVI ADM9.1's which will do the conversion work as they currently do with my Mac.

The motherboard I'm using, the GA-MA78GM-S2H, contains a RealTek ALC889A audio chip.

By using Foobar and WASAPI I understand I am bypassing the Microsoft software but am I achieving a bit perfect output.

Is there any way of doing this using this board ?

I won't bother arguing that it's annoying this can't be done simply because I've read that even the Mac may be intercepting the signal too anyway.

The AVI ADM9.1's contain a chipset that can operate up to 24bit 192khz - I'd like to achieve that if I can.

Any help appreciated - any definitive answers better still !!!

Matt.

Playing a song is:
- reading a file in a certain audio format
- interpreting its content by a Codec
- sending it to a sound card by a driver

Lots of options to manipulate the bits!
And then we haven’t talk jitter yet.

For each driver mentioned above you can find claims that they sound perfect and claims that they are crap.
The only way to find out what sounds good in your ears and on your equipment is to try different drivers.

Thanks for your responses.

It just seems such a shame that it's nigh on impossible to get the sound data output straight to an external DAC without it being touched.

I'm told by AVI that the way they have build the ADM9.1 speakers with internal DAC, means that jitter is not an issue.

Guess all I can do is play. Hopefully I'll achieve at least the quality I had with the Mac - which bettered my system before worth nearly £3k.

I don't suppose you can use Vista Media Centre with WASAPI ?

In Vista there is "exclusive mode".

What you get out of it is what you put into it.

It's there. Find it.

Thanks !  I'm sure it is. And not compatible with every piece of software or hardware so I understand. And therefore probably not easy for a newbie to find and use.  I shall attempt though.

You appear tired of such questions !!

That's a great link - very useful. Thankyou very much for that.

WASAPI the way to go for me then.  I'll have my HTPC built by the weekend and certainly be playing around.

I have the same problem with my ADM9.1 toslink and Windows XP. Is there any software I can use to play any files? I am getting nothing fro my speakers despite all sorts of trouble shooting, from being sure their plugged in to trying Foobar2000 which doesn't have any effect.

There's simply no active "Audio Deivice" found in the "Sounds and Audio Device Panel"...

Please help

Do you have no sound at all including over the build in speakers?
System > device manager: check all audio device drivers for errors, check for updates

Toslink: simply look at the end of the cable, you should see a red glow if connected right to your computer

Testing a digital audio output to see if it is bit perfect is pretty easy. Just play some multichannel DTS or AC/3 audio through it, and see if it gets decoded properly by your decoder. If bits are getting mangled you'll get either white noise or stereo.
