Foobar bases itself on it's pride to use the windows API, at least thats what I see. If it sticks so closely to the window API I couldent imagine having much problem using it in Wine. Although I dont condone the use of linux

Listen... It took me some time to get everything running, but now it is - and I LOVE it... so much more customizability, you can do anything you want. and it looks more nice, is more stable and even faster. You can count on it. in winblow$, surfing is slower, downloading a file goes slower - and the connection is less stable. now, under linux - its all so smooth...

And when you get it running, its so damn easy to manage. updates go as simple as one command, and all your software is up-to-date, you never have to worry about anything. Installing software is damn easy, as is removing it. Right, if you have a problem and you dont know alot 'bout it, it takes some time to solve it. but you only have problem with installation, as soon as it all works - it'll keep on working forever (in winblow$, I had to do an re-install every now and then... hate that, cuz it takes lots'o'time. debian NEVER needs an reinstall, you can upgrade even from 1 major version to another in 1 command!)

While we are borderline off topic..Care to share which distro you are using?

I assume you are using Wine to run foobar? Any particular tips to get it running?

Some time ago I had 0.667 running in WineX, no chance in Wine, just that white noise thingy, native msvcrt and comctl didn't help either, now I tried again, no chance in both, Installer not at all, but when I just copied my 2k-install into fake_windows wine would do it...ok, it doesn't update the window and crashes on 'add directory', but as soon as I find this old 98se-cd I'll try some tweaking with native dlls 

BTW, I'm using 20030618, later versions are reported to be more problematic...

Another odd thing is that I copied my collection from ntfs to reiserfs, foobie reads the tags fine, but when I copy it back to ntfs, they're not recognized...a hex view shows they're still present...perhaps I'll post some more info when I'll have to boot into windows again...for now I just enjoy listening to music  B)

But by reading up on the subject you CAN solve it and in that way learn something about your computer! When I started using linux (about 1997, that was, when I should be learning for my exams  ) I was amazed by the power I was given over my hardware, now with source-based distros ( I'm on gentoo) it's even more, no need to run executables that are 386-comptible on my athlon, no need to compile in support for stuff I'll never need,

I'll give new Wine/WineX a try... (nearly 0.9 I think)
Peter, could you post the DLLs foobar2k and some basic plugins use? (save DirectX)

Last time I've tried (0.7b10 or so) Fb2k didn't work properly - crashed when I've tried to play sound.
But the threading model changed since then, so you never know...

You can find them out out using "wine --debugmsg +loaddll", will print out every dll it's trying to load...eek, it's late at night here, we just celebrated two birthdays and are jamming to Elton John's "Rocket Man"...life's a bitch, but it rocks! Stay healthy!

I remember one time at a LAN i was given a mandrake installation CD, and I thought: "hey, why don't i make a partition, to test this out?" .. It only came to that thought, 'cause before I knew it I was playing all sorts of games in Windows.. get my drift?
How many games runs under linux? I mean, is it only big titles, like Half-Life, Unreal Tournament 2003, Bridge Builder and so on, that's compatible? please indugle me about linux and games

Ok, I'm done with native dll fiddling, it won't solve the remainig problems, which are quite handable: The playlist doesn't get redrawn after another window was over it, which is easily solved by selecting and deselecting everything (although it takes some time...almost two seconds on a list whith my whole collection and is actually unnecessary). Probably a wine/X thing. Perhaps someone feels like making repainting the screen accessible by hot key?  <whistles innocent>

Actually, foobar2000 could be ported to Linux with little effort. (the SDK is quite compatible)
OpenAL output alredy exists (or existed for older fb2k version),
only thing left is UI and some portability changes.

Remember that the plugins would have to be ported as well. While this may be easy for input and dsp plugins, everything that has a gui (possibly only a config page) would make more trouble.

Quark indeed looks cool. and somebody asked (long ago...) what distro i was using: thats Debian. Bit more difficult to install than others- but not with knoppix

and you wont have to install it ever again, a full upgrade whould only take 2 commands:

and you'll be from one major version to the next. And, if you're running the unstable-branch, like me, its very up-to-date.

it might sound freaky, but foobar is the only reason that holds me back from installing linux, i really like this OS, but the media players suck....

Last time I've tried (Wine 20031016 release & foobar2000 0.7.1) it did work only in Win3.1 GUI mode
(w/o native DLLs except msvcp60.dll and libmmd.dlll), with OSS+WaveOut(no 24beet playback for yuo)
and extremely slow.(like 25% of CPU)
Another problem is non-working installer (I've copied fb2k from windows)

Of course there were glitches in user interface (e.g. console window, treeview in preferences)

Have to try with new WineX - last time I've tried (HEAD CVS ~20031109) it was broken major.
I shall try with latest release.

well, xmms isnt that bad?!?!? works fine for me... has all plugins (mpc etc etc).

The biggest pain for me is that it isn't gapless.
