Replacement of my Sony MDR EX-71

Hi there,

Recently my MDR EX-71, bought 3 years ago on eBay, have been broken. I really enjoyed those plugs, and now I'm asking myself about buying exactly the same ones once again, or having a try with something different in the same price range.

I've heard about Sony MDR EX-90 for instance, also about Shure SE110.

My musical tastes are definetely wide, even though my preferences goes to rock/fusion/metal. I do like when I can get every sound on my tracks, and when the basses are powerful but not too much. For all of those points, I was really happy with my EX-71 but perhaps the offer has evolved and you will make me know something better.
Feel free to give me your advices, I'll read all of them carefully.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds similar to my story. I have a pair of EX71 too and usually listen to rock/metal. Then I moved to the Shure e2c (the predecessors to the SE110) and now I use a pair of Shure SE310.

The EX71 are offer a lot of bass. So much that it covers a lot of the hights. The Shures on the other side are very natural. After I bought the e2c, I noticed a lot of details I didn't hear with the EX71.

The bass of the e2c was a little lacking, though I didn't listen to the SE110. I assume that it's improved.
The SE310 sound great to me. The bass is decent. You can hear it well, but it doesn't cover other details like the EX71 do. If the bass of the 110 sounds similar to the 310, I'd go for them.

Thanks for your advices me7.

Actually, the Shure remains a little bit too much expensive for me, so I think I'll step back to some cheaper thing like the Seinn CX300. Do you think it's a good choice ? Compared to my old EX71 and to the current market ?

I moved from the 71s to the Creative EP-630s and preferred them.  Not quite so overwhelmingly loud, and they were more comfortable.  Might be cheaper then what you wanted though.

The Seinn CX300 will be a good choice! I have Audio Techinca ATH-CKM50, ATH-Ck7...
Both of them are not expensive!

I've used the Sony MDR-ED21LP for years.  They cost about half the price of the EX71, but the performance is very similar in my opinion.  One of the main reasons I became hooked on them is that I'm able to get a much stronger bass response than I ever expected from earbuds.  They really do offer a great bang for the buck.

I personally moved from the Sony MDR EX-71 to the Sennheiser CX300 and I've personally been very happy with them.  They satisfied my needs of portability as well as sounding very much adequate for their price.  I also prefer their sound signature over the EX-71 which I thought was a bit too bass-centric.

I listen to a lot of metal, too and was happy with my EX-71s before they broke.  Good luck and I hope you pick something you like.

Anyone tried the Sony MDR-EX85SL? They look very similar to the EX90 and price seems very reasonable.

Finally, I've moved to Shure E2c. The details in the sound are awesome, listening to the new Mars Volta stuff is like rediscovering the whole album for instance, but the bass seems to be a little bit weak. I guess it's because I haven't found yet the proper way to put it in my ears.

A very good chance of that. I've just got a pair of M-Audio IE-10s, and when I finally found the right tips and got the fitting right, it made a dramatic improvement in the bass. The first I got to work was the foam rubber -- do your Shures have that?
