Silence at the begin and at the end of an MP3 file

Hello,
Is there any program that allows me to increase and/or decrease the silence at the begin and at the end of an MP3 file without the MP3->WAV process?
In fact, I don't want to remove the silence, but to increase or decrease it without converting to WAV and reconverting to MP3. Is this possible? Do you know any program that can do that?

Is there a similar program for the Mac?  I loved MPtrim when running XP, but now converted over completely.  I have nearly a thousand MP3s that have between 10 & 20 seconds of empty air time at either end, and I know MPTrim could batch them in one run.

My other alternatives are to manually trip each file with a program like fission or limit the beginning/end times in iTunes, but neither alternative is particularly attractive.  Thoughts?
