My oldest would be Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
If you hold it against light it looks like the military
used it for target practice but it plays fine.

I've got 'Script for a Jesters Tear' by Marillion, which was released in 1983.

Was that really released on CD in 1983? I know that Clutching At Straws came out on CD (with 'bonus' track) at the same time as the vinyl and cassette versions, but I'm not convinced that even Misplaced Childhood had a simultaneous digital release...

Anyway, my first CD was Fish's Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors in 1990; first year at university.

Pretty sure my oldest original-press CD is Guns 'N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction

The Doors The Doors from 1988. AAD, not the re-master. Still plays perfectly and is in immaculate condition. So 'they' were right! Well, mostly...

Well, when a friend of mine bought the CDP101, he got 4 discs with it.  One of them was Beethoven's 9th.  I've got that one. Don't remember which B's 9th it is though. It was multimiked up the wazoo, and was  just a touch unpleasant.

Still plays, though.

That would be Lorin Maazel conducting the Vienna Philharmonic on Masterworks CD36711 which also has Schubert's Symphony #8. I bought that and 9 others at Specialized Sound in Madison Wis on Saturday April 2, 1983, the day after I got my Sony CDP101 serial number 152 from American TV in Madison for only $750 + tax. That machine had a list price of $900 and a month later I saw them in Dallas for $1100. The Dallas folks wouldn't sell me a disc because I didn't buy the player from them.  The discs in Madison were $18.50 a pop. I bought 4 discs in the morning, went home and listened and went back to get 6 more (of the 11 titles). That's how I got a Barbara Streisand/Andy Gibb disc. That was 91% of the total available catalog that day. Looking back, I wish I had bought Sprinsteen 'Born in the USA' though I still don't like him. I don't believe there were any titles before the 10 I bought as I was waiting for CDs - originally called DAD for Digital Audio Disc - after hearing a prototype at the Sony booth at the summer '82 CES in Chicago at McCormick Place.

BTW, all still play fine.

Got my first player in 1986 ( a $199 Toshiba). The first disc I got was Brothers In Arms (since replaced by the current remaster). Also got Donald Fagan's The Nightfly around the same time. Since both were recorded digitally, and considered among the best sounding discs on the market, I had a good experience with CD from the start.

I remember using the old CD Review magazine (I miss that) to help me buy some great sounding discs.

Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith from 1984.  My dad was by far the first one on the block to get a CD player.

My dad owned a small electronics store and bought a CD in 1984 to demo the players with...
The Cars: Heartbeat City. It was Made In West Germany by Polygram(1984).

The silver layer runs up to the hub, instead of having a clear hub. The edge of the disc is really flat and almost "sharp" feeling, compared to the thicker edge of newer CD's. The disc has tons of minor scratches, but still plays perfectly and sounds great to me. But the red label on top, is wearing off and looks ugly.

Ah yes, one of the Wayne Green magazines.

If I remember correctly he was sued by Sony because his magazine had the word "Audio" in the title.  Wasn't the full title "Digital Audio and CD Review" or something like that?  Sony won of course, and he had to change the name.

A great magazine.  I remember that in each issue, they printed a list of *all* CDs that were currently on the market.  It didn't take long before they had to quit that.

Yes, it was great. I loved the fact that they graded the discs on sound quality as well as content. Their opinions regarding sound quality were usually right on the money. Saved me from buying a lot of bad sounding discs.
