how to transcode .aa format

i'm thinking of getting some audiobooks from audible.com, but they have their own lossy audio format (.aa) and my car's mp3 player doesn't recognize it.

is there any way to transcode it?

and yes, i COULD just rip from the audio out channel, but for audiobooks with 24+ hours this is not sensible.

They are protected by DRM I believe. Don't you have an old iPod shuffle lying down in some corner that you could use in your car?

i'm not going to buy a new car stereo or build some cable or radio contraption just to hear an audiobook. i like to listen to audiobooks during long drives. looooong drives. and i don't want to be fiddling around with wires or batteries at 80mph.

well, if there's no way to transcode the damn stuff, i'll stick with cd's. i was just looking for an alternative to driving around with 20+ cd's.

ps: and no, i'm not going to start a foamy-mouthed rant against drm... really, i won't... *sigh*

> buy audiobooks on cd

> rip to mp3 using a sensible LAME setting (e.g. --abr 56 -mm or -b 64 -mm)

> burn an mp3-CD (I was able to fit a 12-disc audiobook on one CD for my wife).

> screw DRM

Have you tried dbpoweramp?  A couple of years ago I transcoded Audible files with it.  I don't know about current versions and codecs.  Maybe someone else does.

Not any more, we had a DCMA takedown:

Like the old gold mine story....

Audible gets the gold and customers get the shaft.

Spoon, this is really sad news.

i don't have a problem with paying for a good book.

i have a problem with jumping through hoops to listen to it.

couldn't find the dbpa filter anymore. i think it was instable anyway, iirc.
