Transcode tool? Does this mean they finally replaced the diskwriter output hack and added a proper transcoder?

This "Hack" is one of the main reasons, why I use Winamp for years. It's a comfortable way to convert exotic formats (.spc etc) to .wav files.

You cannot compare transcoder with DiskWriter.

The Transcoder (ml_transcode.dll), aka Format Converter, requires the Media Library and the CD Ripping Encoders to be installed, and only works with Input plugins which support the Transcoding API (currently: in_mp3, in_mp4, in_flac, in_vorbis, in_wm, in_wave). Whereas DiskWriter will work for converting just about any supported playbable format to any ACM codec, within reason, and doesn't require the ML etc to be installed.

The DiskWriter Ouput plugin is still included with the default Winamp distribution, but for converting supported formats you now also have the choice to use the Transcoder instead :-)

That's why I like foobar2000's transcoder, because it will also work on any input format, and at the same time output to almost any format, except you don't have to stop playing music to do it.

BTW, Peter created both of it. Foobar and the winamp diskwriter plugin.

He made a lot of Winamp's plugins.

in_midi, in_vorbis, out_ds, out_wave and out_disk were all written by Peter.  Nullsoft acquired the rights and source to these at some point.  in_wave was previously written by Peter, also, but I wrote a new version based on libsndfile because we lost some of the original source code.

I can't resist. After adding flac decoding/encoding and 24 bits decoding winamp became my favorite player together with foobar.

I have to admit that Winamp seems to be getting better all the time.

Interface-wise I like my fb2k better, but function-wise, now that Winamp support RG and provide RG scanner, I will wholeheartedly recommend Winamp to newbies instead of fb2k.
