Sound distortion when playing lossless

Whenever I play flacs (sometimes .ape) I get this annoying distorted sound.

Remember, for those who have seen it, in matrix when he takes the pill and gets "dragged out"? Thats the sound I`m getting.
Have tried to increase the buffers to see if that would help but no go. Not sure what the problem is.

Any ideas?

If it only occurs when using lossless files, that does suggest disk-access related problems, like Egor says - because those files are typically large... You could perhaps test this by increasing the buffer in the player beyond the size of a typical flac file (if you have enough free RAM).

Check to see if your hard drive has dropped into PIO mode. If it has, it could be a sign of a failing hard drive.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I decided, before doing something more drastic, to reinstall drivers and move the soundcard one slot up.
I`ve only listened to 1 song but it seems to have done the trick.

Patsoe: you mean increasing it to say 30 megs?

Using Foobar with everything @ default.

Harddrives are fine;)

If the sound rears it`s ugly head again I`m gonna try the sound on the motherboard (which is a Abit AV8).

A VIA issue? AV8 has VIA K8T800 chipset...

Everything is in order thus far...hadn`t had any distortion since I moved and reinstalled.
