Causes of Error Correction?

I have not been able to get EAC working with my computer so I'm breaking things down in an effort to locate the problem. I have used many brand new cd's & still get the red error correction lights going off seconds into the rip. My question is:

What things cause Error Correction?

I'm just looking for a list of potential hardware/software causes.

Thanks a lot!

What do you mean by "red error correction lights going off seconds into the rip"? Does only the first row lit up at the end of some tracks?

Whenever I start extracting from a cd, EAC has to do several rereads, thus causing the Error Correction guage to light up. It happens with every cd & it happens several times during the extraction, not just at the end. I think you may be right in that it is usually just the first row that lights up, but I can't remember for sure. This is accompanied by really slow drive speed (0.1 - 0.7X). I'm just wondering what things cause read errors other than scratched cd's?

Sorry for the confusion.

Missing info:

-drive brand and model
-drive hookup setup
-OS
-chipset drivers
-drive setup in EAC
-extraction log for one of the problem CDs

If CDs are in the good shape, and are not copy-protected, then the drive may be damaged. You should try to rip them on another drive.

Windows Xp
Not sure about drive hookup and chipset drivers. Where do I locate this info?

EAC extraction logfile from 21. May 2006, 13:21 for CD
Herbert / Bodily Functions

Used drive  : PIONEER DVDRW  DVR-K16  Adapter: 0  ID: 0
Read mode  : Secure with NO C2, accurate stream, disable cache
Combined read/write offset correction : 0
Overread into Lead-In and Lead-Out : No

Used output format : Internal WAV Routines
                    44.100 Hz; 16 Bit; Stereo

Other options      :
Fill up missing offset samples with silence : Yes
Delete leading and trailing silent blocks : No
Native Win32 interface for Win NT & 2000

Track  1
    Filename C:\Documents and Settings\G\My Documents\My Music\Herbert - Test1.wav

    Peak level 95.9 %
    Track quality 99.4 %
    Copy CRC E0E247B2
    Copy OK

No errors occured

End of status report

I know it says the copy is OK, but I still don't understand why the drive is revving and is so slow. EAC does a reread several times during extraction, the first row of blocks lighting up on the guage. Something is wrong or I should be able to get a Track Quality of 100%. EAC worked flawlessly on my last two computers.

Suggestions please?

the first row is just plain normal, the speed on the other hand is damn slow

is it generally slow, for example if you play DVDs or is it just with eac?

It is only slow with EAC and this is only during extraction. Playing a CD using EAC works fine. As for the the first row of the Error Correction guage lighting up, it didn't do this on other computers unless the CD was scratched.

I used to have a broken drive (overheated) which would right from the beginning of the extraction turn on the red lights one by one and very very slowly, until all lights were red and a sync error was reported. Then the whole thing would start over again, so the drive never really advanced into the audio CD and I aborted the extraction...

I've run some diagnostics that were included with the pc & everything checked out fine.

Does anybody know how to test a drive to see if it's working properly?

Thanks.

Is Ultra DMA on?

I went through the steps and yes, Ultra DMA was already on. Thanks for the suggestion.

The only thing I can think of is changing the ASPI. I already tried the Adaptec one with no change in the problem. Maybe I should try the Nero or something? Or is it unlikely that this would have any affect?

I doubt switching ASPI drivers/layers is going to improve your situation, however these are all third party ones that I know of: Adaptec, Nero, ASAPI.

Have you upgraded EAC allot in the past without ever removing it's registry settings? I ask because if I was having all that trouble I'd remove the EAC registry settings stored in 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AWSoftware' and reconfigure EAC from scratch to see if that would fix it.

I am not sure if this will help, but have you tried enabling the option to spin up the drive before extraction? This option is in the DRIVE OPTIONS page

I'm working with a clean install of EAC on a new computer. EAC, along with Foobar, were the first programs I loaded. I immediately had this problem with EAC so I tried the Adaptec ASPI with no luck and attempted to install the Nero, but I couldn't seem to get that one to be recognized. Eventually I even restored Windows XP and loaded EAC again from scratch. Nothing seems to help. The funny thing is my last computer gave out & I bought this one pretty much for the sole purpose of ripping audio files & organizing my music. (laugh out loud)

I tried the Spin Up Before Extraction & if anything it's even slower.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm not giving up on EAC yet.

Adaptec ASPI will not help, because it is designed for specific Adaptec hardware.
Download  w32aspi.dll from the Nero website, drop it into the EAC directory, set the Interface under EAC Options - < Interface to Installed external ASPI and restart EAC. Setting the Read Command to MMC1 is another idea.
Good luck.
