NEC drive won't rip a CD

FUCK NEC is all i can say. this is part rant and part plea for help.

i have a CD that i wanna rip (CD from the music store, not a CDR), it's in perfect condition. not even one scratch on it. anywhos, i put it in my ND-3450 DVD burner and surprise: no disc is showing in the drive. the CD doesn't show up, not in EAC, not in explorer, nowhere. i enabled autoplay just to see if it'll help but apparently no. it just scans the drive for like 20 seconds and reports that there is no disc in the drive.

so i take the CD upstairs to another computer that has the exact same drive and the same firmware (1.03c) and behold: it rips the CD just fine. the disc was instantly recognized by windows. it seems to be a problem just with this CD. so far it read everything else ok. well, sort of. yesterday i ripped another CD and in the first track, in the middle of the track, EAC started doing a lot of error correction which i found to be steange because the CD is in perfect shape. i pulled the CD out and re-inserted in the drive and this time EAC ripped the track without problems.

my question is what am i suppose to do now? is my drive toast or what? it's brand new!!

First of all, watch your language.

Second, check for spyware, rootkits, and update ASPI drivers.  Does the "upstairs" computer have nero and the other not, or the opposite?  What versions of burning programs do you have, and what ATAPI layers do you use?

no spyware, rootkits and what not on my system. didn't bother downloading ASPI from adaptec or nero, i'm using the native windows routine. other computer does have sonic recordnow installed, not nero, mine doesn't. as i said, it's not like my drive doesn't rip at all. it does rip everything else, just not this CD. just to be sure the drive isn't faulty, i'll scan the CDs i burned with it. who knows.....

Install the nero aspi layer, it'll work.

I'd rather think that the drive starts to die, to see if it's not hardware-related swap the drives, if it still has issues the best you can do is to try to clean it.

i tried with the nero aspi and it didn't work. i've never seen shit like this really, that it's capable of ripping CDs just fine but not this one while an identical drive upstairs reads the the CD perfectly. i'm gonna try to install sonic recordnow since i don't have a data burning program anyway. hopefully it will install "something" that will resolve the problem.

I dunno about the 3450, but I have a 3540A and it works really well. Maybe you were unlucky. My condolences.

no need for condolences, bring out the champaign!!!! it works with the nero ASPI. i just forgot to change it from EAC from the native winxp routine to the external nero ASPI layer <insert pic of mule here>. now it reads the CD perfectly!
