Vorbis in iTunes

I searched the site but didn't find any information on how to play Vorbis files in iTunes. I have a friend that's considering selling music online in Vorbis/FLAC format but he's concerned that the non-MP3 encoding format may alienate a large portion of his market. I know that most media players either support Vorbis natively or have a plug-in for it, but as he's a Mac user, iTunes has a prominent influence on his judgement. And again, it isn't a matter of what *he* can do, but a matter of providing a more realistic view of the impact of Vorbis encoding and the masses.

So, is there a way to play Vorbis files in iTunes? And how much of the mass market does iTunes represent?

I don't know exactly, but as far as I remember it was possible at some point, at least on OSX.

I think you should also pay attention to the fact that a very large number of mp3 portable players don't support Vorbis as of yet, especially IC USB keys.

It's more like a large portion of the market that's unwilling to encode with anything else, AAC, Vorbis, etc.  It's bad enough they call them "MP3 players", which is like an oxymoron.

The whole IPod/ITunes craze is only a U.S and U.K phenomenon. They sell like hotcakes, because of clever marketing tactics and ease of use.  Download the Quicktime decoder above that should cover you. Apple is unwilling to support Vorbis out of the box anyway, even if there was a push for it.

Watch out, that library is very incomplete... it doesn't read the track numbers, so you can't play a complete album
