LAME preset standard... mono?

I use audiograbber and, for stereo, set it to APS (vbr 2), joint stereo, normal...

For mono, I click the mono button instead of joint stereo, and leave all else the same... it seems to aim for perhaps half the bitrate as for joint stereo tracks... but is this really achieving the same quality level (reliable but not guaranteed transparency) as APS?

It seems to wind up with an average bitrate of more than half the same mono track recorded with joint stereo (which I understand is wasteful for mono tracks, because it doesn't allow stereo info to be reduced to zero).

If I want the same quality level for mono as for stereo, am I best off using the mono setting or using joint stereo and accepting the bloat?

(I've searched and still am not clear on the answer to this.)

Thanks,
JRL

Using the mono setting is fine.
However, this will not cut bitrate by half, this is normal.
