APE -> MP3

When i use Monkey's Audio to convert ape to mp3, it will first convert the ape to wave first.  Is there a Lame encoder that will accept ape (***or apl) as input?  Or any program that will do the job without decompress the ape to wav 1st?

The audio has to be uncompressed to be encoded to a different format. There's no Mp3 encoder I know of that will accept Monkey's directly (uncompress and encode sample by sample).

Edit: foobar2000's Diskwriter component may be able to do it.

Even fb2k will still have to decode to wav first (even though you may not "see" it).

You can also download a modified version of mac.exe with piping support here and use commandline or foobar2000 without an intermediate wav file.

edit: forget it! I'm talking nonsense here. I should read and think before i reply, sorry.

Works for me.

Is your source file on a read-only device?

Try running it from the command line and see what response you get.

If you're not familiar with the command line then save the code below as ape-lame.bat, in the same folder as your new LAME, and drag the APE file onto that rather than LAME.EXE.

Code: [Select]
LAME.EXE %1
PAUSE

Alternatively set up a new CLI preset in foobar and use that to do the conversion.

If you want to be able to choose which version of Lame or any other encoder to use check out ACDIR. It works with any encoder that accepts input from a pipe.

Seriously, foobar2000 is probably the easiest and fastest solution (especially if you have a dual core). The APE (& APL) input plugin is here: http://www.foobar2000.org/components/index.html and foobar can use any version of LAME, just rightclick on your APE files in the playlist, choose Convert to... and select an MP3 format with the desired bitrate/quality.
