Tag&Rename replacement

howdy, folks!

i've been using Tag&Rename for quite some time to fiddle about with tags of my mp3 and wma files, and keep everything in order. it seemed to be absolutely fine, alongside windows media player, but now that i've switched to foobar, it's picking up all sorts of things like extra tags unsupported by Tag&Rename (things like tempo and whatnot that i really don't care about), and things like multiple tags with the same name (two tracknumber fields, for example). now, i know i can configure foobar to ignore these things, but i'd rather get it right in the first place and not have to hide anything. foobar's masstagger alleviates this to some extent, but only in terms of removing unnecessary tags- it can't do a thing about duplicate tags, or swapping over values from one field to another (media player counts band and album artist as the same thing, hence why i have a mix of both). Tag&Rename does this well for some fields, but for some reason it doesn't recognise album artist as a field (which is rather silly).

so, the short of it is that i'm looking for something more powerful than Tag&Rename for fiddling with my tags, and being the audio technology enthusiast's resource i figured the kindly people at this site could help me out with some recommendations... and ideas, folks?

Learn to use foobar2000's masstager.

indeed i would, but i've been told (on the foobar forums) that it can't do what i want it to do. if it had syntax and functionality along the lines of SQL, that would be particularly useful. after all, it does claim to use a database, it would make sense if you could manipulate it as one.

"RENAME artist AS blah WHERE blah = "blah"" would be a particularly useful way of doing things. that is, if you have fields called 'blah' that only have 'blah' as their content, but you get my point, right?

Could You be more specific what you want to do?
For swaping artist album:
1) copy value %artist% to %foo1%
2) copy value %album% to %artist%
3) copy value %foo1% to %album%
As to duplicate tags, select whole album, right click, properties, and delete unneceary tags.

Its hard to imagine that theres stuff you need SQL for where foobar will not do, but failing that, you could actually install mysql, get some tag libs, and start programming.

Try "The GodFather".
It has an album database, where you can actually use simple SQL to select and then update whatever you want.

BTW: If te provided interface would hinder you in doing what you want, you can still use the db alone (with Access) and then write back the changes to the files.

Mp3Tag is a great piece of tagging software and well worth trying.

And for those that must have unicode support, which Mp3Tag currently does not support, see the following from the Mp3Tag forums:

I'm now working for 5 days almost night and day to get Unicode working with Mp3tag. At the moment there are almost 1500 compiler errors left (nothing said about the real bugs that will occur), but I'm still optimistic

It will be a long run to the next Development Build, but please be patient and stay tuned

Best regards,

This is partly in response to the new Foobar2000 0.9 betas, as it's become apparent that ISO 8859-1 support has been removed for ID3v2 tag writing. And it will only be possible to write Unicode tags in Foobar, which leads to Mp3Tag being unable to see them... until Florian provides unicode support

Great stuff Florian.

well, for example, i have an album by Jools Holland. all tracks on the album have their album artist tag set as 'Jools Holland', and since most of them are performed by Jools and another artist, there are two artist tags, one for Jools and one for the other artist. i'd like to be able to remove all artist tags, but ONLY when their value is 'Jools Holland'. if i were to do this in 'properties' it'd remove all tags, surely?

and thanks jaybee and matyas, i'm looking into those right now. i'll get back to you

I'm a long-term user of Tag&Rename too. Given that you'll have registered it, have you tried emailing Evgeny asking him to consider adding this functionality?
