Conversion of Midi to Wav or Midi to MP3?

Is there any way to access the yamaha xg softsynth sounds via timidity or some similar program for a rendered midi output?
So far Timidity only gives me silence and otherwise confuses me, and wingroove uses a different soundfont, even though I have it set to xg.

Direct recording isn't good on my computer as it gets glitches too easily.

I don't know about Yamaha, but the only way to get Timidity to work properly at all on my computer (and another I tried) was to put it into c:\timidity and then use the instructions johnsonlam provided. Even when I thought I'd changed all the paths to fit where I'd put it it wouldn't work unless it was in that specific directory. If you have the Yamaha sounds in .pat form it should work equally well with those if you make a new .cfg file to point to it - I've got cfg files for three different soundfonts and they all work fine.
