Tag Editor/Manager Programs

Just trying to get an idea if there's one preferred program that everyone uses?

Also, if you could give a reason for your preference and was it freeware? I don't mind paying for one if I like it enough and chances are I'll use it for years and years to come! Thanks!

I use Apple iTunes.
Mainly because it supports ALAC, which I've found no other Tag Editor that does.

The poll seems a bit useless, as it's missing the most popular taggers, like Tag, The GodFather, Mp3tag, Tag&Rename and others. You should probably check those out.

Thanx Gambit, I didn't really know which tag programs were popular so I googled and used the first few I came up with...I guess I should have just asked the question without polling!

@Thinkum...I tried to start a thread in the "poll" forum and it wouldn't let me? Probably another newbie error, sorry.

Gambit is right - this poll needs to have the above taggers in it to be taken seriously.

My choice is [a href="http://www.mp3tag.de/en/]mp3tag - although because this is the first one I found, and that I like and it does what I need, I've not tried the others as mentioned above (ok m3tag doesn't have unicode support but I don't think I need it - or haven't yet anyway).

BTW AudioShell (discussed here) is a nice app that shows promise (from the people that give us Tag&Rename), although it is not a Tag editor/manager but "is a freeware MS Windows Explorer shell extension plugin which allows you to view and edit music file tags directly in Windows Explorer."

I like MP3Tag's Autonumbering wizard feature & ID3v1+v2 support. I like Tagger's Capitalize & Replace With features.

Tagger supports All Music, Music Brainz, & freedb look-up but that Amazon feature sounds interesting, what exactly do you mean by "amazon tagging feature"?

I also prefer mp3tag. You can either use the easy select, click and type-in way for fast retagging (e.g. changing a lot of files from ID3 to APEv2, match ID fields of multiple files) or scripting for more sophisticated tasks (renaming based on tag info with creation of subfolders, simple arithmetic functions etc). And it supports a lot of file and tag formats, too.

Just another source of album info, in addition to freedb

Amazon.com support: search and import album information and cover art from the amazon.com, amazon.co.uk and amazon.de servers to files tags.

Mp3Tag after trying many I found on the 'net (but not the ones people are listing here!?  ). I occasionally try a new one but none beating Mp3Tag (yet). I'll have to go try out a few new ones now...

Ok. I have an extra element to throw into the question...

What's best for (re)tagging and (re)naming (via tags and vice versa) on a Mac? I'm relatively new to this Apple stuff and I'm pretty comfortable using iTunes as a player and some basic tagging, but I have tons of files with funky filenames but good tags (and vice versa), and I really don't think iTunes is up to this task.

In the windows world I usually use the dbpoweramp stuff for this - or occasionally the library part of MusicMatch (the only good part about the program IMHO).

Free would be nice. Open-source would be better, but I'm interested in anything that's available.

Thanks!

Aaron

Ok here's my two cents.
The 1st question is whether you want a freedb based tag or cddb based tag.
Freedb based - Mp3tag, Tag & Rename
Gracenote - Helium - the new 2005 version is tops.
Music match is good when you want to tag isolated files and also if you are high on album art.
abander tag control has quite a few bugs, but fetches lyrics very well.
foobar 2000 is also good. but it strips album art and adds ape tag. Not good if you want to stick to the (buggy) id3v2 tag that supports all sorts of extra info especially with helium.
In the end my vote goes to florian's mp3tag v2.29e 'cos it's very simple intuitive, supports freedb (including local freedb) and is very configurable. Edit the strings and you can tweak it to your taste

Thank you!

On a sidenote, [a href="http://www.mp3tag.de/en/download.html]Mp3tag v2.30 is available now

OK, this info is great, thanks to everyone who replied! You all are a much better source than just "Googleing" like I started out doing!

I played around with "Abander Tag Control" for a little while, trying to do this. (main reason it made the poll)I never was able to get the lyrics to show up in their proper column tho? It was like I was doing something wrong, but I couldn't figure out what? Granted, I only spent about 30minutes trying? The thought of being able to store lyrics in my tags is sooo cool!.....I THINK it's a awsume idea! But I tried for awhile to achieve this and was unsuccessful Is there anyone who has played around with this feature a lot? Does this make the files too large, I haven't seen too many discusions about it here at HA?

So, in all so far, it appears "Tag&Rename" and "MP3tag" are the most popular programs by far!

@Florian> I read the "Mp3tag" Home Page and it doesn't mention lyrics, are they an option?

@anyone> Do the lyrics simply get placed in the "comments" section of the tag? Depending on what version tag I choose?

Oh, and one more question to anyone please: I was reading somewhere about using album art for the folder icon-----Another WAY-COOL idea!  I never thought about this, is this possible? Can you really replace the normal "folder" icon with the album art, in windows that is?

Sure, if you don't count all the foobar2000 votes...
[span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%']Assuming people really bothered to used the "Other?" alternative[/span]

As I personally use foobar2000 for listening, it feels inefficient, or at least awkward, to use another program for tagging. After having set everything up the way I like it (masstagger presets + foo_freedb), tagging is usually done in a few clicks. After all, I'll add my files to foobar2000 for replaygain scanning and listening anyway. Oh, and when I'm ripping, EAC adds most of the tags I need.

Earlier, I used to prefer Case's Tag with the Tagger frontend.
