Simple MP3 resampler

I was wondering if anyone knows of a simple programs to change an mp3 from 128 to 64 bit? A free program?

In the topic, you ask for a resampler. A resampler changes the sample rate. You can't do this without reencoding.

In the post, you are asking something to change the bit depth, which makes no sense whatsoever for MP3.

If I have to guess, you're asking for something to change a 128kbps MP3 to a 64kbps MP3. The only way to do that would be to reencode.

not that I use mp3, but isn´t it somehow theoretically possible to transcode mp3, like mpeg2-video?

cheers

dang Garf do you got a stick up your ass or are you just plan anal? I am just looking for a simple small program that will I guess reencode an mp3 of 128kbps to 64kbps. If I used the wrong wording than excuse me. If you are smart enough to mock me, then you should be smart enough to know what I am asking.

So now that you know what I want, can you help me or do you wish to make fun of me?

Man some people. Make a mistake and they walk all over you.

Try dbpoweramp music converter.

Garf was totally polite. Nowhere did he mock or make fun of you. He is not anal, you are neurotic. Grow up.

You can use a mp3 file as input to the LAME encoder.

CDEx can do that as well.

He answered you perfectly. [span style='font-size:12pt;line-height:100%']RE-ENCODE.[/span][/u][/b]
You can do this easily enough using Lame without any frontend or extra stuff. You just need to have --mp3input specified in the commandline.

For example,
Code: [Select]
lame --mp3input --alt-preset cbr 64 infile.mp3 outfile.mp3

Alternatively you could use a frontend like dBPowerAmp or RazorLame.

I think it's worth mentioning, that re-encoding MP3 to MP3 is a horrible, horrible idea. Especially at these bitrates. Unless you have a really good reason to do it, transcoding or re-encoding should be avoided.

In ToneDef's defense, when he said 128 bit to 64 bit, I immediately assumed he was referring to kilobits per second, not bit depth. That said, Garf (who seemed slightly anal IMO, but maybe was just addressing the terminology so other people reading the post didn't get led astray, or he was just replying quickly because he helps out lots of people in this forum with his advice, and replied to his initial interpretation of the post) did give the right answer, which is that you need to re-encode.
Or more specifically (if you only have the 128kbps mp3 file, not the original cd, or if you don't want to spend the time re-ripping the cd since you're only encoding at a low-quality anyway), transcode.
You can do this with Lame, specifying high-quality, and cbr 64 (not sure of --preset cbr 64 is meaningful at this low of a bitrate) and --samplerate 22 (or something of the sort - I'm not at home so I can't look at my Lame helpfile). Or just do it through a frontend such as CDex.

Btw, you can download Lame (use 3.96.1) and CDex.

edit: added links to program downloads.
God kills a kitten every time you encode with CBR 320

'Anal' is not the right term to use. 'Professional' is. So is 'neurotic' (not refering to Garf).

I would suggest dbpowerAMP for really easy transcoding.

To reiterate, transcoding is harmful to the quality of the affected music.

I apologise on behalf all newbies to garf. Use dbpoweramp tonedef, you right click on the file to convert.
Or if you have a while lot of files and want to preserve the folder structure, you can also use dbpoweramp file selector. Both are freeware. Have fun, but you may not like the sound of the 64 kbps file you end up with...
