Can't rip a CD without copy protection?

I have a problem with ripping a CD, although it has no copy protection whatsoever. I get the error message that no appropriate read command is found for this drive. The read command is set to MMC1 and works with any other CD. I suppose the problem has to do with the fact that the gap before the first track is shorter than 2 seconds and my drive can't overread into LeadIn/Out. What can I do to rip the CD anyway?

Any help is much appreciated.

Well, I'm an idiot. that's not 1 second and 21 samples or something, but one minute and 21 seconds. It's a hidden track.
Somehow, I don't know how, I managed to get the settings right and rip the CD.

But how do I get the hidden track? I can only access it via my stereo.

The hidden track is actually a (longer) gap. A gap (often incorrectly referred to as a 'pause'), is the music part that preceeds the actual track. By default EAC creates a WAV for each track, which both holds the gap and the actual track. This can be seen in a Cue sheet (pregap is the part between time indexes 0 and 1).

What you want is ripping gap & track to separate files. You can do so with the EAC command "Copy selected tracks Index-based".

I tried that, but all I get is silence.
Are you sure, that it is possible to retrieve the hidden track with any drive?

Not with any drive.  I also have a CD with a track hidden in the pre-gap of track 1.  It doesn't rip with either my NEC NR-7800A or NEC DV-5800A.

I'm not sure if it can have any incidence on this, but in EAC options / Extraction, try unchecking "Fill up missing offset samples with silence".

Why should it ?

The read command error can appear for various reasons...
Maybe the drives have actual positive offsets which are too large and aren't capable of overreading into the lead-in ? The subindeces aren't stored in the TOC...

There are two other methods for ripping the pregap of the first track: Ripping to an image and the "append gaps to next track" funtion.
I know that I know nothing. But how can I then know that ?

In EAC select Action -> Copy Range.

You can now rip the pregap.

I always rip my CDs as an image. The gap is included in it, but silent. I also tried the copy range method and got the same result.

Since the hidden track is only a conversation and no actual song, I won't bother with it any longer, it's not a very big loss.

Forgive me if the answer should be obvious, as I often miss things that are "implied"...

Is it safe to assume that you have tried to rip the disk using the option "append gaps to next track", instead of the default option "append gaps to previous track"?

Did you verify that the pre-gap does actually contain audio data, by using the action "test gaps on silence (F4)" ?

Anyway, if all computer drives can't access the pregap of the first track (=hiddentrack), whatever settings you use, try recording your audio player's digital output bit-truely to hard disk. This should be the same like having ripped it (same file).

Sorry to interrupt, but the method test gaps on silence would be F3, not F4...
And it only works when you did a 'detect gaps' with F4..

No, I didn't, but I'm absolutely sure that there is no copy protection of any kind.

Yes, the gap is accessible via the range selection slider, but as I already stated, when I rip it, I get silence.

Lacking a soundcard with a digital-input port, I can't do it the way you suggested.

When I rip into multiple files, I use the option "append gaps to next track". But like in this case, I usually create a single file image. The mentioned options don't matter in this case.

I usually test for copy protection by looking at the underside of the CD. Using a bright light the data track at the end should be visible.
