Converting Mp3 192 -> 128

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to these forums so sorry if I'm reposting an already posted topic but I had trouble finding my exact answer and the search limits words to at least 4 letters in a word so I had trouble with that.  If there is a topic that was already posted please link me here if not any replies would be appreciated

Anyway, I have some 192 kbps files that i wanted to convert to 128 kbps.  However I realize to convert these files some encoders will recompress an already compressed file.  This is something I do not want and was wondering if there was a way to just maybe convert it without actually recompressing?

I also have some un-DRM'ed files that are .m4a files and i wanted to make them .mp3's.  Does this action also recompress or does it just convert?

Thanks in advance guys!

Both of these actions will require transcoding.  mp3 does not have any bit peeling functionality so going from 192 to 128 will requires decompression and recompression to mp3 again.  Also going from AAC to mp3 will require decompression and compression to mp3.  Both of these will result in further degraded quality than reripping from the source but you should let your ears be the judge.  Try a few files and see if it's acceptable for you.  If not, then you should rerip if at all possible.

I would re-rip however...  most of these files are from Apple's Music store which I loved until I realized...  if I buy this music I'm stuck with one player (the ipod).  Well I recently got a Muvo N200, with all this ipod shuffle hype I wanted to get something smaller in addition to my ipod mini for running or jogging that wouldn't skip.

So anyway I un-DRM'ed my music and they are all .m4a files now and I've re-encoded to 128 kbps and its really really hard to tell the difference.  My ears are pretty trained to know what sounds good and what doesn't so I'm guessing when I recompress its not recompressing as much as it did the first time please correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, I was just hoping there was a way to convert without recompressing but I was doubtful but was worth a shot asking all you experts.  Thanks!

Well, you pretty much answered your question if it sounds good enough to you than
good enough it is.

As for re-encoding degradation I guess you could look at is 'as much' data size wise
but quality degrades regardless since now trying to compress audio that already (isn't) what it originally started as introducing artifacts etc..
