G-Force for foobar2000 released!

After much hard work, G-Force 2.7.2 has been released and can be found at soundspectrum.com.  The most notable addition to this version is that it now fully supports foobar2000.  I'm confident that everyone here is going to really enjoy it!!

Special thanks goes out to the beta testers who gave me some great feedback and bug reports, and I look forward to further feedback from everyone.  Also, it'd be great to get a link to soundspectrum.com/gforce added to foobar2000.org/components.html.

Finally, I expect to have WhiteCap for fb2k done in a couple weeks after I get done with some other stuff in the inbox.

Great work!
I got to say I'm impressed by this vis. There is only one major drawback at the moment, and that is the lack of panel support. I know I personally won't use it on a regular basis, until it can be added to my sidebar. So, I hope support for it will be implemented in a future version.

While testing betas I never had a single problem. Made me feel pretty useless...

Btw: IMHO, the text that introduces new tracks doesn't look very good. Reminds me of a piece of art that has been abused in MS Paint. It just doesn't fit, and i think Milkdrop does a much better job. Often the "drawing" lines in Gforce itself, gives me kind of the same feeling.

Very nice ..... !  However (and as you probably heard before) the panel version is a must-have  IMHO.

This is because GF uses 8 bit color.  If you try to anti-alias text in 8 bit mode, it looks much worse, trust me.  Hence, I can't anti-alias text w/o it making it look like ass.  :^(

As much as I'd like to add that kind of support, it's not much of an option right now.  Put yourself in my shoes--myself and three others are trying to pay rent and bills with this thing.  We unfortunately must spend most of our time on stuff that *all* of our users can benefit from (not just fb2k users).

That said, G-Force "3" due out in a couple months will come with a GUI/control-bar (that all Windows users can use).

I realize that we're all trying to make a living but am I the only person who has a problem with a nag screen appearing while the vis is running?
I'll stick with foo_vis_bacon and Milkdrop.

UI Extension implementation is not that difficult, and there's even at least one source example of a panel which can undock to a pop-up, so it wouldn't be too hard to turn that into a dock option for your existing pop-up.

Some users request more features for their platform's front-end, and your response is that you would rather work on core visualization. You compare the request to WMP and RealJukebox for having "all shine and no usability." Well, I suppose if you consider visualizations and presets "usability" instead of "shine" and user interface customization "shine" instead of "usability", then you're not going down the same road.

Don't mind me, just passing through. It's not as if these panels are widely supported, or as if any other add-on visualization has ever been dockable, to my knowledge. Well, at least for this player. It's possible to make a generic window dockable with the one third party user interface component which introduced this extension, but this concept is otherwise unique to Winamp, which requires developers to support its own brand of extensions for dockable visualizations.

Note: I see that there has been some more posts after I started to write (takes time), but I'll leave it as is.

Yes, I do understand this, but I just think (based on my impression, that could be wrong) that you haven't brought this plugin to the spot where alot of people will be interested in investing in the "Gold" version. IMHO, you kind of stopped about a meter before crossing the finish line. You haven't "won" yet, and hence no "sponsores" will come knocking on your door. One more meter, and maybe you hit the "work vs yield" sweet spot. Another thing I could be wrong about is the simplicity of turning it into a panel, as I believe it's pretty simple for a skilled programmer. My impression is that there are quite a few of the latter around here, and you already mentioned that foosion has helped you alot, maybe this just requires another 5-10 minutes of work with his help (if he's interested that is).

I'd *much* rather spend dev time on new vis features and functionality rather than GUI additions.  Companies like Microsoft, Musicmatch, and Real have mastered the all-GUI and crappy content model--*screw* that, IMHO.[a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=260170"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
It sounds to me that you're not very familiar with foobar, it's "philosophy" and this community. It's pretty much all about avoiding useless bloath. (I'll admit that I have played alot with TAGZ formatting and foo_looks coding in useless ways, but that was mostly just for fun.  )

G-Force and our next generation vis are designed to be immersive on their own automatically, without user interaction (although an almost unlimited number of methods to intereact with them are available).[a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=260170"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
I'm looking into the config options as we speak, but my impression so far, is that this is the kind of config thing that people around here will like to fiddle with. Customizing it to fit personal taste and maybe they will need to "go Gold" to achieve just that. I have even thought about buying the "Gold" version myself, even though I have never been a fan of visualizations earlier. But, I happen to like this plugin, and the albumart support looks interesting.

I don't want to be rude, offending or anything like that. The above is just an attempt    to express my point of view, and you should get some more feedback from others. Maybe especially the people that knows the SDK and such.

Btw: I truly admire your work and find G-Force quite fascinating.

Edit: spelling

Might be related to the general lack of native vis plugins. Anyway, there is a panel version of foosion's simple spectrum plugin.
A riddle is a short sword attached to the next 2000 years.

Andy, I don't want to play the Vet here but I downloaded and used WhiteCap a couple of years ago, the day you uploaded it to winamp.com. I'm sure of that because at that time I was checking their plugins site on a daily basis -) Was a quality spectrum if you ask me, and performance-wise my pentium2 266 was liking it too -)

Now I'd like to try this new version of Geforce out but the installer indicates: "Supported media player that are not installed are not selectable". That's a bit of a bummer because in fact my foobar's on D: so I don't have to install it everytime I format C:. I know I could spend 2 minutes of my life and get this sorted (it tries to detect the uninstall key?) but I wanted to let you know that many other peeps might do the same as I (whichever player they use btw).

Edit: Just noticed it detects Real Player although I don't have it (real player alternative here sir) and WMP although I removed it via add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components *scratches head* =)

The installer looks for the foobar uninnstall reg key and the install reg key.  If you've moved your foobar folder after you installed it, then I'm sure how the installer is supposed to know that it's elsewhere.

my gforce window seems to be always on top
can you make that an option instead of default?

of course it would be the best if g-force has panel support ;p

Poke around the "customizing" section of the docs as well as the faq.... there's dozens of options and flags you can play with (including th float on top option--PREF_FLOATING_WINDOW).  Note that since the GF window is part of your fb2k window, it will float no matter what if your fb2k window is set to always be on top.

It just occured to me that if someone installs foobar with the /e switch (so the installer only extracts the files, which AFAIK means that no registry entries done, the G-Force installer will fail to find the installation. Perhaps it should be made possible to select the install directory for not players recognized players?

I like this vis, and promise to buy it if panel support is added.

Like audioscrobbler and hydrogenaudio it deserves to be supported, but the lack of panel support is a killer.

I haven't moved anything. Plz consider the following extravagance:
1. install to D:\Program Files\Foobar2000
2. format C:
3. install Windows
4. run foo_assoc and associate
It's fine (besides I don't have add/enqueue in folder's context menus and need to run that exe for wma support - if i'd need wma support that is)
Having said that, you're 100% free to blame me if your installer installed the software for 2 players I don't actually have on my system, and didn't install for the sole visualisation-aware player I have...

This VIS plugin is pretty nice, although it would be nicer as a panel  Besides that, is it possible to make the window resizable and movable when it is borderless? It's a bit annoying having to close plugin, change configfile, open plugin, reposition, close plugin again, change config again and then open it again to get it in exactly the right place.

Heh, good point.  Devs, it is possible to make a borderless window in Windows that's also resizable?  I'd love to add it.

Separately, I forgot to share w/ folks that, although it's kinda hidden away in the docs, if you have G-Force Gold and set a track's "APIC" tag to the pathname of an image file, it will be displayed as album cover art (soundspectrum.com has a screenshot of what it looks like -- [a href="http://soundspectrum.com/g-force/screenshots.html]http://soundspectrum.com/g-force/screenshots.html[/url] ).  For example, you set it to "D:\fav boy bands\foo.jpg".  If folks here have any ideas on what we can do to more easily integrate album cover art, I'm all ears.
