Are you sure, you mean decoder?
The LAME decoder is actually mpglib from mpg123 and quality wise as good as the FhG decoder in Winamp... Only older FhG decoder implementations had a bug
If you mean encoder LAME is superior to FhG... (just use the search function of this forum and you'll see why  )

yes I meant decoder.

I need to decode some mp3s and needed to know which is better.

So you are sure the quality is the same?  Cause the Winamp's decoder is always considered excellent.

MPG123 (The same one LAME uses), MAD and Winamp's decoders work perfectly. Anyone of these is safe to use.
