Plextor PX-716

A few days ago, Plextor officially announced their first DVD writer capabile of recording DVD+R DL at 4x. Other speeds include 16x for DVD±R, 8x for DVD+RW and 4x for DVD-RW. Like the PX-712, the drive can read CDs at 48x, DVDs at 16x and can write CD-Rs at 48x and CD-RWs at 24x.

One of the new features which should dramatically improve burn quality are the AutoStrategy and Intelligent Tilt features:
  • AutoStrategy is a self-learning writing technology for optimizing the writing quality on any type of media.
  • Intelligent Tilt controls the laser in three dimensions ensuring high quality writing and reading on discs with surface imperfections.
For a complete list of features, please visit the official product page.

Could they include any LESS software?  How about at least ONE full version of something ANYTHING worthwhile?  Geez, what's next?  A 30 day trial of the burner istelf?  Or a SE or LE of the burner, then you have to subscribe to Plextor to actually use it?  At the VERY least, they could include the full version of Nero Burning Rom.

Actually, Plextor includes a full version of Nero Burning ROM ... only "Nero Vision Express" is limited to 30 days (along with all other supplied programs, of course) ...

Personally, I do not mind since I bought a full retail version of Nero 6 because I swap CDRW/DVDRW drives a lot and don't want to go over the hassle with these "burner-specific" versions of Nero ...

As for DVD playback software ... they really should include a full version for the people using the burner as DVD-ROM ...

Just wondering... Would it be possible to flash 712A with the firmware of 716A?

I doubt that since the 716A (according to Plextor) will introduce new hardware features that the 712A isn't capable of.

Same thing with 48x and Premium, I guess ...

Too bad I purchased my 712A a couple of weeks ago. Don't want to pay 150 € again.

Over here it'll be more like €200...

We'll have to wait and see how it actually
performs, media compatibility etc.

Don't know if I wanna get another Plextor
after two malfunctioning drives...

What happened? My Plex Premium has really lived up to it's name.

It's strange: a friend of mine has also had two broken Plextors, while I'm using my fourth Plextor already (my first one was the good old PX-412 SCSI), and they've all worked flawlessly.

Then again, AFAIK all Plextors I've had were models that were manufactured by Plextor themselves, while my friend's drives were probably using other chipsets. I don't know if that can be a possible reason...
