the difference is THAT small with normal not clipped mp3s! Only with clipped mp3s it performs much better!

I still use it btw!

MPEG Audio Decoder (not a bad name )
It's been around for a couple of years now. It should be most usefull for 24 bit sound cards (but I use it too).
Hint: I set the clip detection somewhat less agressive so it kicks in much smoother.

Oh, in case you realy didn't know: http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/mad-plugin/

edit: no id3v2 support (but what the heck)

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

After installing the MAD plugin winamp only starts with an error: "This application has failed to start because vcedit.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem". You have to stress _may_ because reinstalling doesn't do any good, the error remains. Does anybody know what could cause this problem and how to solve it?

And another question: in the winamp install there is a Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder plugin included. Is this the Fraunhofer version?

The problem is that "vcedit.dll was not found". To solve it, find vcedit.dll.

Preferences -> Plugins -> Input -> Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder -> About:
"MPEG Layer-3 audio compression technology licensed by Fraunhofer IIS and THOMSON multimedia".

That means it's licensed by Fraunhofer/Thomsom, but doesn't means it's their decoder.

FYI, the old Nitrane decoder showed the same sentence, and that wasn't FhG's decoder for sure.

Anyway, it's the FhG decoder there.

I can't use it to play streaming anymore,  since I switched to XP.  It drops the audio every 10 sec or so..

What a glorious idea, but I couldn't find this dll
I searched my harddisk if it had been deleted accidentally but there was no vcedit.dll. I also did a search in Google but even there was no link where to download this dll. Further help is appreciated.

Remove your Winamp directory completely and re-install it with necessary plugins. That should always work.
Btw, that .dll sounds like it has something to do with Vorbis, but I haven't seen any plugin use it. Vcedit means vorbis comment editor.

I will try that immediately.

Google search for vcedit returned one result which was in the context of vorbis.

I deinstalled Winamp but when i double click on an audio file winamp opens??!! That ain't funny! And when it is started the whole system becomes laggy and nearly hangs up.

I have a W98 partition on C: and a XP partition on D: Programs for XP are installed on D: and progs for W98 on E: The Winamp which is started (after deinstallation) is from partition E: Is XP that crappy that it mixes up everything or is Winamp responsible for all this troubles? It should be possible to install Winamp two times on different OS's.

edit: forgot to mention that the problems occur under XP

Lagging is new to me, but you can easily disable Winamp's file associations. Go to preferences (ctrl-P) -> Setup -> File Types and click on button labeled "Select none".

Yes, it's possible and they shouldn't conflict in any way. Your lagging isn't caused by two installations, but I don't know what is causing it.

I manually deleted lots of registry entries pointing to e:winampwinamp.exe instead of d:program fileswinampwinamp.exe and did a fresh install. Right now it works....I will install necessary plugins now.

Only thing which I don't like is this automatic crossfading feature. When you resume, pause or stop a song there is fading. I hope this can be turned off.

Yes, it can. In Preferences -> Plugins -> Output either configure DirectSound output plugin and disable fadings, or select WaveOut output.

Thx, I set the fade length to 0ms, there was no 'disable'. But I also installed SSRC plugin which makes crossfading plugin obsolete. What I always have wondered is what plugin Winamp uses if there are more for the same purpose, for example if I have crossfading and SSRC plugin. Can you clarify this for me?

Yes, there is. Double click on "on pause/stop" and uncheck "enable", do the same with "on seek".

Winamp uses the plugin you have highlighted on the config screen.

Double-click, OMG, this was _not_ obvious.

I see. Wasn't sure of this.

How does the MAD decoder rate *quality-wise* to the normal WinAmp FhG decoder?
It may make songs sound "better" some or most of the time, but I worry the playback may not be flawless like WinAmp's decoder currently is.

Nearly the same, if not the same.

The "song sounds better" is psychological. Mr. Garf tested it against the FhG decoder more than a hundred times. He said there was a difference, but extremely subtle. And, IIRC, he couldn't say if this difference made the track sound "better" or "worse" using MAD.

More info, and Garf's comments, here: http://ff123.net/madchallenge.html

Roberto.
