Which Winamp? 2.91 or 5.02

Is there any compelling reason to switch from good old winamp 2.91 and Winamp 5.02? Which one do you use?

IMO there's no reason not to use Winamp5. It does everything the old one does, just more efficiently and with more options. Just my opinion though, someone might think differently.

I still use 2.91 on my old laptop, a Pentium 266MMX.  I don't meet the minimum requirements for 5.02.

Well, not a compelling reason, but winamp 5 does come with the new vorbis decoder which does not mess up the tags

I am still using Winamp 2.91, but I am willing to upgrade if:
1.) Sound-quality will be better
2.) Hardware-requirements are pretty much the same
3.) Complete support for Winamp-2-plugins (I use a LCD-/IR-plugin).

cheers

Going from Winamp 2.91 to Winamp 5.02 is like going from Foobar2000 0.7 to Foobar2000 0.8 . That alone compels me to make the upgrade.

Unlikely, or at least with MP3. I have seen very few tests where people could successfully ABX two non-broken MP3 decoders. The one in 2.91 is not broken and neither is the one in 5, so I doubt you will hear any difference. Same story with Vorbis, but I don't know about other format decoders.

Having said that, Winamp 5 is very very cool and would be my choice if I used Windows.

I doubt it will sound better, but I still highly suggest you upgrade. Winamp 5.x is a continuation of Winamp 2.x, and has several bug fixes and added plug-ins you might want. With some slight configuration, and using Classic Skins, you can get it to run at about the same speeds (if not faster) as your current setup. You can use Winamp 2 skins with Winamp 5, but there is a very slight chance that it may be broken. I haven't experienced any of that, but if your plug-ins have stopped working with 5.x, try seeing if the author upgraded it to work with 5.x, or contact the author yourself. He should have no problem fixing the plug-in to work with 5.x now, as the SDK was released not too long ago.

and if for some reason, you want to stick with the unsupported 2.x line, there's an unnofficially released 2.95 version that you can find hidden out there, to upgrade to instead.

Thats the one I use . . . or should I say the one I have . . . . since vis_bacon was made for foobar2000 I really only keep Winamp around for nostalgia, as visualization was the only thing I ever used Winamp for.

I still use Winamp 2.95 because there still is a annoying bug with Winamp 5.02 in classic mode. When u start Winamp 5.02 from a shortcut Run: minimized only Winamp will be minimized and not the other screens. I have tried a fix form the Winamp forum winamp502_gen_pl_fixer_v1_0.zip, but still the same problem. If this is fixed I’m glad to use Winamp 5.xx

they might've fixed that bug in 5.03. from the changelog:

"* fixed pledit/video windows showing up at startup when minimized"

I use 5.xx with the classic skin.
I am not even sure why I use 5, 2 was just fine I guess it is the placebo effect.
One thing that might make me go back is the 'Please enter serial number' thing...

Unfortunately settings are not used on a per user base on a Windows pc.
Result are crashes for users with less permissions on those pc's after a admin used Winamp 5xx.

But I like the Media Library very much it’s better then the I-Tunes Media Library.
I’m missing a way to display; without plugins, Album Art and Lyric from Metadata.

Actually 2.91 isn't the latest Winamp2. There is a 2.95, with updated (post 1.0.1 CVS) Vorbis plug-in, and some other fixes.

Oddly enough, I never saw that version on the nullsoft site.

Found it on oldversion.com, though.

I use WA 5.0x for two reasons:
1. Stability.
2. It can be sized to fill the whole display above the taskbar, something which I wan't WA 2.xx to do for years.

WA 5.0x hasn't crashed even once on my WinXP Pro SP1 system, whereas WA 2.9x was always crashing.

I still use Winamp 2.91 (Winamp 2.95). I'm happy with it but I'll try Winamp 5.02 to see if it's better than the one I'm using
