Is it possible to have gapless MP3 playback with Winamp5?

You can always just turn on the crossfading function from the EQ menu!

But this is not true gapless playback!

If the track change is in the middle of the music, crossfading is very noticeable. The question is, if it can read the appropriate Lame header.

If you need gapless mp3 playback, try Otachan's in_mpg123 with a GAPLESS output plug-in.
e.g. DirectSound output v2.2.3, out_asio

I can confirm, also, that this plugin gives audibly gapless playback (without the undesirable "overlap" of crossfade).  It's been noted, I believe, that this plugin may not provide truly frame-accurate gapless playback, but this is the one I use for all my MP3s with Winamp.  The current version is Shibatch mpg123 plugin v1.18y ot55 (in_mpg123.dll), build date 6 Dec 2003.

So i do guess im the only one with true gapless playback issues in MPC... Theres always a small pause/click on change...

Is it possible to have gapless MP3 playback with Winamp5?

Yes it is, and you don't need an extra plugin.

Options|Preferences|Plugins|Output|Choose DirectSound output and press the"Configure button"|

Device Tab=No settings needed as long as Primary Sound Driver is chosen

Buffering Tab
---------------

"Prebuffer on start / seek underun" 500 ms

"Buffer-ahead on track change"      520 ms

Check "Eabble CPU useage control"

Fading Tab
---------------

Choose your own preferences here.

Other Tab
----------------

Check the "Silence remover" leave the default on -40.0 dB

You could enable "Volume control if you want

Click "Aply" and "OK"

Now you will have gapless playback...

Although, not as fluid as with foobar

It is "almost gapless", not gapless.
As harashin said, truely gapless playback needs proper plugin and mp3 encoded by lame 3.90 and above.

My wonder is if they have done anything to the formerly lousy internal EQ..

I think they have updated the EQ for a better sounding one since v2.90

That's right. They currently use the 4Front EQ (George Yohng/XMMS), but make sure that the Fast Layer EQ is disabled in in_mp3). It is said to work flawlessly, especially the loss of high frequencies does not happen.

Can you encode an existing WAV file with Winamp or must it be via Ripping from a CD only?

From what I've heard, only from cd's.  I don't know if it's on-the-fly encoding during ripping or if it encodes after the ripping is done.

Not right. You can do that with special output plugins: out_vorbis and out_lame

Or you use the diskwriter plugin, but for that you have to have acm codecs installed on your system (eg. radium).

winamp has 2 problems with gapless playing.

1) The in_mp3 plugin doesn't support it. Solution: Use the mpg123 plugin, which supports that! Or try to compensate the lack by turning on "Remove Silence" in out_ds.

2) The limited Winamp input-dsp-output architecture. use higher buffer ahead on track change values to compensate (is hacking around, tnx pp) the problem.

See Hawk's suggestions above.

Well, with default in_mp3 I think the best "try" to play gapless mp3 is the overlap crossfading. But it's a bad workaround.
I also have no lucky with Hawk advice... I got a big and ugly gap between tracks. It's not even close to foobar gapless.
The "remove silence" in out_ds is no good... there is no silence between tracks to be removed.

The only way is with mpg123 plugin... beautiful mp3 gapless playback. Just like foobar. Thanks for pointing this plugin.
The question is: Anyone knows if there is any quality difference between in_mp3 and mpeg123?

Winamp 5, I like it! It seems that Windows Audio MPEG Player once more does whip the llama's ass! I also like the 60's style advertising on their home page

I haven't had any gapless playback problems since Peter's DS output plugin with "Buffer ahead on track change" option, but that's because I'm using Musepack for my audio needs

Other benefits of in_mpc include full ReplayGain support and APE v2 tags, naturally!

On the other hand I agree that their in_mp3 should support at least gapless playback and ReplayGain, and even possibly 24-bit output. APE v2 IMO isn't quite popular enough that mainstream players would have to support it.

If they licensed the Dolby AAC decoder/encoder, they should be able to use the MPEG 4 audio format (which is based on AAC) as I am sure Dolby is a MPEG member and has rights to use AAC and license it to others (such as Nullsoft). Correct me if I'm wrong.

MP4 is not an audio format/codec and has little to do with aac. MP4 is a container format.
AAC just happens to be what you normally wrap in mp4.

Both Winamp's own plug-in(FhG) and mpg123 are decent enough, so there should be no
audible quality difference, unless a bug exists.

Sure all things are workarounds. If the remove silence option doesn't give you good results, try increasing the db value. There are "silent frames" in MP3, even if they are not supposed to be there - that's an ugly MP3 limitation. To crop them by the db level is  a workaround for that. But the better solution is to work around in the input plugin, as mpeg123 does. Good to hear that at least mpeg123 works for you!

But sadly the mpeg123 plugin has tagging issues and doesn't work well with the ML tagging-wise. I think it's a sad story that the alternative winamp plugins (mpeg123 and MAD, which doesn't support "true" gapless) seem to not being updated anymore, for example to work well with the 2.9x+ ML. Does anyone know if there is any development going on with them??

One thing I would like to state: There is no replayGain support in Winamp itself, but there is a great DSP plugin for that: http://www.xs4all.nl/~walterln/replaygain/

If you understand Japanese or Chinese language, mp3infp solves the in_mpg123's tagging behaviour.

ooh, I cannot really speak Eastern languages

but I'll investigate  your link. tnx

EDIT: Hmm, are there any language packs available? As there seems to be a SDK out there on this page.

For all those interested: this one extends the abilities of WINDOWS itself to tag your files  in the properties dialog (own tabs for IDv1 and IDv2 tags!).
Mpeg123 shows the properties dialog when clicking on file info.

But I think one problem will not be solved by this. This is correct file (tag) reporting to the ML. This is needed since Winamp 2.90 and plugins have to support this (maybe Case can tell some infos on this).

if I start wa5, then ca 2 times out of 10 (not a fixed number, happens randomly), some part of the gui disapeared. eiter the playlist editor or the main window
if I then check the options, the missing window is unticked, so it won't appear (anymore). I had this problem up from rc8 untill the final-final 16.12.03 build.
(I know stuff like that is better posted at the wa forums, just wanted to check if sb have a quick solution for this, or can confirm that...)

so, does anybody got the same problem?

NO, AFAIK. But you can ask its author about that.

And sorry to say, but I don't know about technical issues.

Yes, Only with the classic skin (Windows 2000 SP4).
With the RC releases it was a known problem, but still not fixed.

See Winamp forum:
-Classic skins: If Winamp was closed in minimized state, Playlist
(and video) windows are maximized on reopening Winamp.

Silly question.. did they get rid of the minibrowser?  I only see the media center, and it seems to have no site browsing capabilities..  It looks to be a nice tool, but I found it handy to (usually) be able to pop up the web page of the net radio station I was listening to for info, playlists etc,  without having to open a browser and search for them.

Nothing about minibrowser in the help, either..

They have moved it to the media library. It is in the "Now Playing" entry
