FhG: l3enc and ACM/Producer Pro

dBPoweramp identifies some of my files as being ripped by FhG (ACM or Producer Pro) and others as being ripped by l3enc.  What's the difference?  Which is better?  ...and where can I find out more?  Basically I'm trying to identify which of my ripping programs is best for low bit rate (non aps) stuff.

Is the ACM the same codec just installed as a windows codec?

Thanks guys,
Fairy

PS- I have two FhG ACM codecs installed in windows:

(1) MPEG Layer-3 Audio Codec (advanced) v1.9 (Build 305) and
(2) MPEG Layer-3 Audio Codec (professional) 1.2 (Build 63i)

Which is best?

Difference is that one file have been encoded with Producer other with L3Enc. The better regarding to what ?

Based on umm higher version number of what seems to be 2 different branches.. Well, that's one way to look at this.  I wouldn't however count 100% on that...

l3enc is the very, very old 16bit DOS MP3 encoder. It was the first software MP3 encoder ever.

Producer Pro and the ACM came much later. Quality is almost surely better than l3enc.

About the ACM: The professional version allowed bitrates up to 128kbps in some cases, up to 256kbps in others. If it goes up to 320, it's probably Radium.

The advanced version usually only went up to 56kbps. Still, there is an "advanced" version that goes up to 128kbps (don't ask) that was ilegally distributed with MP3hc's MP3compressor.
