Winamp equalizer not working with .ogg files?

Hello.

I am a newbie to the ogg format, and am especially interested in it because of its support of perfectly gapless files.

I tried encoding some files today in .ogg format. I encoded a track using -q6, and for comparison I encoded the same track in mp3 format using --alt-preset standard with LAME v3.91 (both files were encoded from wavs ripped with EAC).

I listened to both in Winamp with the equalizer turned off, and upon casual listening I concluded that they sound very similar. However when I turned my equalizer on (it is set on full bass and treble with low volumes at mid-range, sort of a V-shape) and listened to the 2 files, they sounded very different. The .ogg file sounded a lot "flatter", as if the equalizer didn't have much effect on it. I thought maybe the equalizer didn't affect .ogg files at all, but this is not the case - there is a slight difference in the playback of the .ogg file with the EQ on and off (a lot less difference than in the playback of the mp3), so the EQ does affect the .ogg file, to a certain extent.

Has anyone else observed this? Is there a way to tweak something so that my mp3 and ogg files sound similar with the same EQ settings?

Thanks for your help.

More info: I am using the Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder v1.15b.

The reason for MP3s to sound better with the EQ is the option "Fast Layer 3 EQ" in the Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder configuration. If you turn that off, it will sound like crap, just like OGG. I don't know of a workaround for this

You might want to try the Shibatch Super Equalizer. It's far better than the one that comes with Winamp.  You can get the plugin for it here.

The winamp eq. is said to cut off high freq.'s so you should never use it.

Use the plugin crowfax told you about.

I use a resolution of 800x600 (15'' screen) and:
1) this plugin's window can't fit in my screen! The title bar is beyond the top of my screen so I can't even move it!
2) it uses some bold, big font and the numbers of the frequencies are cut off!

How can I use this thing?

Sorry, I though you were talking about the tag editor for the vorbis plug.  Ignore me, I am an idiot.

I don't wanna sound like I'm dissing the maker of such a fine plugin like Shibatch, but I think it could do with being made a little smaller...

mmmm...

After trying out the Shibatch EQ, I found out something...

I would really like to know if anyone else has experienced this.

While using the Shibatch EQ, I noticed that the visualization in Winamp is ahead of the music. (i.e. I would "see" a beat in the vis a split second before I actually hear it)  This was the case with any mp3 file I played. At first I thought this was happening because of the gapless plugins I had, and tried changing my buffering options in every way you can imagine. The problem did not go away, and I tried taking every plugin out of my plugin folder to find the culprit, and Shibatch EQ was it.

With Shibatch EQ out of my plugin folder, the visualization's timing is perfect.

Anyone else have the same problem?

According to Shibata-san, this delay is impossible to avoid (if I remember correctly). I remember him explaining exactly why, I'll try to find the post over at r3mix for you.

Naoki Shibata:

This problem comes from limitation of dsp plugin.
Winamp dsp plugins operate like follows:

1. Input samples are given in array.
2. dsp plugin modifies the samples.
3. Samples are output in array with same length.

The EQ and some other plugins have to
introduce delay. So, it's impossible to output
exactly corresponding part to the input.
Besides it, AFAIK, dsp plugin cannot detect
start/end of song. So, internal buffer cannot
be flushed. If there were method to detect
start/end of song, the output array must be
filled by some appropriate samples at the
beginning of songs. So, people who want to
listen with gapless output plugin will not be
satisfied.

The real solution is to make dsp plugin able
to specify output length, and start/end of
song to be detectable.

(If you want, here is the thread that it came from, but please ignore the shit that I wrote there )

Thanks Dominic, that helped a lot. I was having that problem of part of previous song playing when changing the song, too. Thanks for the link!
