Arrgh...it's ridden with "letmeputAOLiconsonyourdesktop-itis"!  (Easy enough to uncheck the box at setup, though.)

What a pretty new skin, "Winamp Modern".  Playback sound quality has improved dramatically via the ultra-placebo effect of the modernized color and shape.      (Just kidding!)

One problem, but a minor one.  Using the "modern skin", Winamp and the playlist window don't remember their position when re-starting.      Oh well...common skinning problem I guess.  I should use the classic one anyway so MuchFX2 will dock.  Guess I'll be stuck with the "gray-box-look" forever.

Preferences are arranged a little differently, but most of the same options are still there.  Same version of most plug-ins (the ones I use anyway).

Re: visuals...I've only tried Milkdrop a little with the beta so far.  It seems to load considerably faster to fullscreen mode (less than 0.5sec vs. previously taking about 3secs) and I'm getting nice 85fps+ rates in a good-sized window, but I'm not positive it's not another part of my config that might be affecting performance (such as fewer processes in memory).

Release notes are extensive, so I'll have to spend some time to see what all's been done since the initial 5.0 alpha.

@papadoc:  The link to Sawg's page is not working for me..I'm getting:  You have encountered a "Not Found" error.

I'd be more disappointed to see this if I didn't have foobar2000.

Has winamp always been free?  I seem to remember it costing $$ a looooong time ago.

Anyway it seems like they've been hard at work.  I did have a nasty crash in my 5 minutes of use but other than that it looks quite good.

Seems very well planned to coincide with the iTunes release, that gives those features for free.

Why would anyone pay to encode with LAME?
Btw, the aac codec appears to be free... interesting...

Winamp used to be shareware back in the old days . It became freeware in 1998 or so. Just after I registered it.

MP3 encoding costs money because it's actually legal. i.e. AOL have to pay their $2 per unit to Thomson for it, and they don't want to absorb that (somewhat understandably, considering their financial situation). There's no one-time license fee for MP3 encoding like there is for decoding.

I think it is talking about *intentionally* crippling the speed of ripping in the free version in order to get you to upgrade, rather than a slowdown associated with secure ripping.

Yeah, it's limited to 2x in non-Pro versions.

Interesting news for Peter Pawlowski and foobar2000 users: go into General Preferences -> Titles -> Advanced Title Formatting and check the format syntax. Looks very similar to foobar2000's, doesn't it?

Now press the Help button. Seen it anywhere before...?

I was initially quite taken by surprise, but then I realised it seemed to have been replicated from the title scripting in the ogg... I mean, vorbis input plugin, which was coded by Peter himself.

Edit:

Erm, yes, they are. DirectSound (SSRC and non-SSRC) and WaveOut output plugins, Ogg Vorbis input plugin, and a lot more for Winamp3 too.

LAME is free, whereas Winamp would cost money to do the same?  Have they not understood that Winamp3 failed due to adding things we didn't want?

Keep in mind that since the last major release of 2.nn, Nullsoft has been bought by America Online, and is likely suffering some level of disparity between what customers want and what corporate management wants.

Natural selection will guide them, as it does every company.  They'll -1- put the most weight on customer's needs and stay in business and become hugely successful, -2- they'll ignore customers and fade away into the night, or -3- (most likely) they'll do something in between and find some level of success as a business unit, while still having what they'd consider a not unmanageable number of complaints from end-users.

Winamp 3 didn't work out well for several reasons, from what I've read...some reasons are technical, some concern usability and features.  Winamp 5 is on the right path though, IMO, combining what everyone loved the most about Winamp 2.9n (almost everything) with the free-form skinning support (and perhaps a few other items) from Winamp 3.

Regarding LAME being free...the source code can be freely distributed (because it Ain't an MP3 Encoder, you know    ), but not runtime components, so they can't bundle a runtime LAME encoder for no charge.

Why don't they just bundle the source code, and include a tiny, miniature C compiler in the WinAMP package...    Runs once the first time WinAMP 5 is run (compiles Lame sources), then not again.

Well, a plugin is not a skin. On the other hand, my old "Winamp 2000" skin for Winamp 2.x works right.

Sorry, I should be more informative

Winamp5 is fully based on winamp2 core, so it only support plugins from winamp2.
This heappens because winamp3 componentes are made in wasabi plataform (wa2 don´t).

Winamp3 freeform skins are made in a script language that was implemented in winamp5 through a plugin.

In short...
1) wa5 accept wa2 plugins
2) wa5 accept wa3 skins
2) wa5 don´t accept wa3 components

I hope this to be more informative enough

Dumb question: How exactly does one rip with WinAmp?
Why isn't "aac" selectable in the diskwriter output?
