Difference between 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen iPods?

I've been considering one of these shiny shiny toys recently, and being a skinflint I'm attempting to get the cheapest I can find.

In my searches I've come across some 2nd generation 30 Gig iPods, and was wondering barring the obvious 15Gb and 30Gb versus 20Gb and 40Gb sizes, what are the actual differences between the 2nd and 3rd Generation products?

The firmware can by updated to the 'latest version' using the Mac Updater AFAIK giving you identical performance in software, and I can't seem to find any tales of physical differences, but was just wondering if I'd missed something bleedin' obvious.

The third generation player is slimmer. Check out Apple's website...
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.

Specs.

The line out on the base of the newest iPods is the biggest difference in my book.

There actually is no fourth generation Ipod...they just kept the old prices and updated the hard drive so that their model stays competitive...

Furthermore, all of the buttons on the 3rd generation iPod are touch only, whereas only the scroll wheel is touch on the 2nd generation and nothing is touch on the first. If you're planning on getting one with any touch buttons, make sure it comes with a remote too. Otherwise you have to constantly keep flicking the hold switch on and off, as touch buttons are activated much easier than normal buttons :\

Ahh .. it seems that I'm referring to the difference between the new updated hard drive sizes on the 3rd Generation alone.

As this model is going to be coming over from the US and I'm in the UK, will there be any power supply issues that I'll have to play with?

There shouldn't be; the iPod's power adapter supports 50-60 Hz and 110-240V.

You can buy a World Travel Kit from apple which is just a bunch of different plugs that fit into the modular iPod (and iBook and PowerBook) power adaptor.

Of course you don't need to do this, you can use a simple US->UK adaptor instead (as I did recently, except vice versa as I was using a UK iPod in the US)

As for your other questions there are multiple differences between the 2nd and 3rd gen, the bottom line being: get the 3rd edition and watch out as many peripherals are designed for the 2nd gen. It usually says "designed for iPods with docking stand" or something rather than 3rd gen.

Also note the cheapest one comes without a remote control, carrying case or docking stand and although you can buy them seperately, it's not worth the saving.

Apparently, the cheapest way to get an iPod is to buy them from Dell and use as many coupons as possible (coupons seems to be an institution in the US, I don't really understand where you get them etc. Maybe an American can chip in).

Actually, you would pay more if you get all that stuff separately! Therefore, I would take the $399 model. It comes with all that fancy stuff already + you have a bigger hard drive. Of course, you could also get the most expensive model for 100 bucks more, but all you get is a bigger hard drive and a player that is bigger than the others are. So if you are low on money and don't need a remote and all that other stuff the $299 would do fine, however you get the most out of your money when you take the $399 model

I think I was a little slow getting my sh!t together on this one and the refurb model I was considering getting from apple U.S. has been sold.

After looking on the iPodlounge site, I've seen the link to the Dell site, with the instant 10% off, but the coupon number has expired. Any ideas as to where the hell you can track down these things, or do I have to rely on a friendly American on this one?
