Sharper Image Products

I can't decide whether Sharper Image sells some really fascinating or really silly/inane products -- actually I think they're both at the same time.

Check this one out, it's a doozy example of the above:

Can't help but think how totally far out and "sci-fi" this kind of stuff would have seemed 30 years ago.  Maybe even 10 or 15 years ago.

Edit -- I'm not affiliated with Sharper Image in any way (just thought I'd say that, since it's the second time I've mentioned one of their products around here).

A dog translator, lol. Well I guess if people have the money to spend, or should it be waste on weird products more power to them, and their lighter wallets. The things people sell are amazing. What's next, a glow in the dark flashlight.

With my dog I've already figured out one thing, when the dog starts saying "woof woof woof" for about 2 minutes it means it's treat time, so I have to get the Milk Bone dog treats out.

I will say one thing though, the Ionic Breeze air cleaning system they've had out for a few years is interesting, I want one.

So do I... they're on the pricey side tho (despite all the claims of not having to replace air filters, I'd rather spend less initially and spend on filters/electricity gradually -- less blow to the pocketbook).  But I spend so much time indoors that I could really use one of those things.

P.S. it's worth subscribing to their catalog... always interesting to flip through while sitting on the can.

Yeah it is pricey. But. considering I have a Vornado Hepa air filtration system $200, which costs about $30 per year for just 4 pre-filters, plus the electricity to run a powerful motor, plus the $100 Hepa filter that must be replaced every 2-5 years almost equals the price of the Ionic Breeze. So roughly it would be about $280 every five years for my Vornado system, minus the electricity it consumes since I don't know how much it costs for that.

The biggest problem I have with systems that take filters is the dirt and dust accumulation, and the noise, the noise is very annoying. Also if the filters are not changed when they need to be the air filtration system turns into a forced-air stink machine by blowing the funky smell from the old filters into the air. I'd personally like to just wipe of the rods the Ionic Breeze has and be done with it, I know what I'm asking for this Christmas.

Just a quick note.  Consumer Reports did a small article on the Ionic Breeze products.  They said they were a useless waste of money.  (I'm paraphrasing.    )

EDIT: typos

Maybe it wasn't Sharper Image that sold them (come to think of it, almost definitely not), but I want to get the "robotic" roving vacuum cleaner I saw on an infomercial once...

I've used air purification systems, and ionizers for over ten years, and there are some out there that are useless. However, if the thing doesn't "work" it could always be returned.

By the way do you have the link to that particular article?

The other electronic-precipitator model, the Sharper Image SI637 Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier, proved unimpressive in our tests. Ads for this unit tout its silence and miserly power consumption. Both are attributable to its lack of a fan. But so is its disappointing performance; we found almost no measurable reduction in airborne particles.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Most portable room air cleaners have an Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) label on the box indicating the maximum coverage in square feet. We suggest buying an air cleaner designed to cover an area larger than the one you're treating. That allows you to run the unit on its quieter lower-speed settings, yet maintain adequate air cleaning.

The electronic-precipitator Friedrich C-90A, $475, remains a top choice. It's powerful enough to perform impressively at Low speed. Potential freedom from filter changes can offset the roughly $200 difference between it and the high-rated filter models within a few years.

Also consider the Whirlpool AP45030HO, $250, Bionaire BAP-1300, $220, and Holmes HAP675, $200. All three of those air cleaners scored relatively well overall.

Thanks, good to know.  I don't think I'll get an Ionic Breeze after reading that... not worth the price (imho pretty high) if it doesn't work well.
