Nero 6 and UDF long filenames

Supposedly Nero 6 would finally be supporting up to 128 characters with UDF mode (which the specification allows). However, according to the Nero 6 FAQ, "Nero cannot write longer filenames than 64 characters".

Why doesn't Nero support 128 characters which the UDF specification is designed to support??

Nero 6 appears to burn long filenames - I successfully burned this file, 83 characters:

19. Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Piano - Pieces Froides (1897) - V. Dance De Travers II.mpc

Nero 5 wouldn't let me.

interesting... was that using UDF?

Why not just use CD Extreme to burn files with long filenames. It's free, and supports filenames up to 212 chars in length (ISO level 2) using the Prassi Engine.

I just installed it last night, and burned some CDs with rather long filenames without a hitch. Very slick, intuitive GUI...

I prefer to use UDF format for long filenames because it is the same fileformat that DVD uses... so it's likely to be compatible with most of future hardware.

mkisofs/cdrecord can compile/burn ISO9660:1999 which allows 255 characters, and the famous Burnatonce win32 frontend also lets you use this feature. It also seems useful for certain characters normally not allowed. For DVD media UDP may be better tho.

I compile the discs using iso9660:1999 + Joliet + Rock Ridge

I'm not sure I'd be that concerned about compatibility down the road. DVD only uses a subset of UDF (micro-UDF). I think UDF-Bridge will be around for some time (although you might have a point given that the Joliet extensions for ISO-9660 aren't explicitly included in UDF-Bridge).

So much for standards...

I chose Nero StartSmart > Make Data Disc then added my files.

I guess that's ISO not UDF and the "Relaxed ISO Standard" seems to be the default. Sorry for the mixup.

that's really strange, because according to their own FAQ, burning that many characters with nero 6 is impossible....

I mostly burn all my ogg cd's with ROMEO (128 characters) format.
and RockRidge for my BSD apps. with the -U switch can disable all filename restrictions.
Might consider using the UDF 1.5, (filenames up to 255 characters).
Don't use Nero since it never included the ROMEO format.

These UDF, Romeo and ISO level 2 are interesting, but does Windows recognize them ?

yes, Romeo is defined as Windows 95 long file names up to 128 characters.

"Universal Disk Format (UDF)

"Universal Disk Format (UDF) is a CD-ROM and DVD file system standard developed to ensure consistency among data written to various optical media, by facilitating both data interchange and the implementation of the ISO/IEC 13346 standard. UDF is required for DVD-ROMs, and is used by DVD to contain MPEG audio/video streams. Originally developed as a replacement for the ISO 9660 file system, UDF is used by CD-RW in a process called packet writing that makes CD writing more efficient in terms of the time and disk space required.

UDF supports a maximum volume size of up to 128 terabytes. The maximum file size is equal to the size of the volume containing that file. UDF allows up to 255 characters for a file name."

RockRidge is for UNIX®, but you can combine a RockRidge + Joliet, it is readable with a windows system. ( not sure if one could do a HFS+RockRidge+Joliet though??)

I confirm, Nero 6 can write 128 characters long files. That's one of the new features in Nero. You have to check some options before burning your CD though.

Using the UDF-mode will do the job with long filenames. OK.
But but but.... be aware to use V2.01. Because meanwhile some of my DVD´s which were burned in that mode, were not readable after successful burning-process. Both of my DVD-drives (the Traxdata (= Ricoh)-burner and the LiteOn-DVD-ROM) were not able to read them. Then I switched down to V1.02 - and everything worked fine. Still don´t know the difference between the concerning versions. - Can anyone explain it to me?
So: Better you use UDF 1.02.
My used codecs and settings:
FLAC V1.1.2 -4 / APE V3.99 Update 4 -high / MPC V1.15v --q 5 / LAME V3.97b2 -V2 --vbr-new / OGG aoTuV V4.51 Lancer -q5
