Does Foobar read tags from mkv files?

Every time I rename an mkv file, it's tags in Foobar are lost. The same when I drop a library path and add it again. The tags are written with Foobar. What am I missing here? Cheers.

Not exactly sure what it is your doing but I have no problem reading, altering and saving tags of mkv files within foobar2000. I do know that if the mkv files are very old foobar2000 has problems reading but once they are remerged (I use mkvtoolnix) all is fine.

Let me descibe a scenario.

  • (Re)create an mkv file (with audio) using mkvtoolnix.
  • Add tags to the file using the discogs plugin.

Foorbar is using the tags nicely now.

  • Rename the file.

Foobar lost the tags.

  • Rename the file to the original name.

Foorbar is using the tags nicely again now.

To me it seems Foobar is only using cached tags here....

Cheers.

Sounds to me more like foobar lost the path to the file and after renaming it again naturally the path is restored again and foobar can read the tags again.
I have my foobar monitoring the library path. So I changed the file name and foobar can still read mkv tags with no problem.

Monitoring is on.

I can't reproduce this problem either.

Are you using some third party component to tag files that uses file path and name as its index method?

You can check with MKVToolNix GUI if the file has tags. Just drag the file over the GUI and it shows how many global tags the file contains.

What happens if you open your mkv file properties in foobar and select Tools -> Reload info? Do tags disappear from a file that previously had tags? Do tags appear to a renamed file that was missing tags?

PS: I recommend using .mka extension for audio-only Matroska files just as mkvtoolnix defaults. One immediate benefit is the ability to associate audio files in foobar2000 and keep video files associated with your preferred video player.

No other tagger then discogs tagger.

The files certainly have tags as mkvtoolnix and mediainfo show.

When they are still there, they disappear when i hit 'Reload info'. And they don't come back when they were (already) gone missing.

These files happen to have video as well. However, I made an audio only mka out of an mkv and with that mka file everything is working as expected.

Could you create and share a tiny .mkv file that shows the problem? I tried tagging some video files and couldn't replicate the issue.

I just tried it with a new (default) profile and all is well. Now I can't even reproduce it any more with my old profile after dropping all lib paths. So weird.
