Which Headphones?? Samson SR850 VS. Sennheiser HD 201

Hi all!

I used to be a professional singer/songwriter but have taken a LONG break and am going to get back into it and start a little youtube channel. I play acoustic guitar and sing. I will be building up the tracks with some light percussion - shakers and tambourine and lots of harmonies. I won't be recording anything crazy loud. I am also doing this as a hobby so I want a cheap set of headphones but I want ones that don't sound cheap. What can I say I am a Mennonite and want a lot of bang for my buck! haha!

I have done some research and it sounds like the 2 best cheaper headphones are the Samson SR850 ($64) and the Sennheiser HD 201 ($33)

I want to get the $33 one because it is cheaper :P but thought I would post on a forum to see what ya'll think.

I appreciate any thoughts on these 2 headphones thank you!

Katelyn

You should try them by yourself. I find SR850's headband isn't for my head while  HD201 is more comfortable and suits better. But I prefer SR850 more for its quality of sound and signature (better frequency response and THD)

SR850 is essentially Superlux HD668B http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SuperluxHD668B.pdf

Since you'll be listening to a backing track while recording another track and you don't want the backing track to leak into the mic, you need closed-back headphones.  That rules-out the Samson.

For monitoring background tracks, sound quality isn't too important as long as the sound is not so bad that it's unpleasant to listen to.

And, most pros & exports recommend against using headphones for mixing & mastering so you don't need  high-quality headphones in a studio.   But of course, most pros like  to use good quality "pro headphones".

And of course the bad news is, that you do need good quality monitor speakers and a good listening  room if you want to make pro-quality recordings.

One thing you can do is listen to your production everything you can get your hands on (your home stereo, your car stereo, a boom-box, headphones, etc.,) and compare to a known-good recording in the same genre.   Pros do that too, but with good monitors that they are familiar with and years of experience they can get a good result with less back-and-forth.

Out of curiosity I recently bought a beyerdynamic DTX350m (~50 Euro in Germany). They're real great with respect to sound quality to me and outperform my great 130 Euro Grado SR80e. They are closed cans (but don't isolate extremely),  lightweight and very comfortable to wear.
I should add they won't win a beauty contest.  They look as cheap as they are.
