Foobar to control NAS->Naim

Dear all

I have my music stored on a NAS with Logitech Media Server running on the NAS. I want to be able to control my Naim UnitiLite player from our various laptops.

Can I use foobar?

I've installed:

foo_upnp.fb2k-component
UPnP_MediaRenderer_Output.fb2k-component

I can see under Playback | output | device that my player has been found but no media servers

Have I misunderstood foobar and the plugin capabilities?

LMS is not a DLNA server.  Try the UPnP/DLNA plugin available in LMS > Settings > Plugins.  If that doesn't work, you'll need to find a separate DLNA server such as Twonky that will run on your NAS.  Did Naim have any recommendations on compatible servers?

Try Serviio as well if you can install it on your NAS.

Now I'm more confused! I'm running LMS on my NAS and can see it on all control points. See LMS settings | plugins | uPnP/DLNA media interface plugin. Works very well.

In foobar I can see it in "View uPnP browser" and can browse to individual albums. If I double click a song I get "unrecoverable playback error: uPnP device error"

I was expecting foobar to behave something like Kinsky. Have I misunderstood?

If you haven't done so already, reboot the NAS to be sure LMS restarts with the UPnP/DLNA plugin enabled.  It wouldn't be entirely surprising that the plugin isn't working for you; several people on the Squeezebox forums reported flaky experiences with it.

Anyway, you need to find a DLNA server -- like FreeNAS, ReadyDLNA, or Serviio -- that will install and run on your NAS.  It would help if you'd reply with your NAS brand and model so we can look into it.

It is true that foobar2000 can act as both a DLNA server and a renderer (control point).  For this to work, you need a PC running foobar2000 with its DLNA plugin whose media library is indexed to your music folder on your NAS.  You may need to assign your NAS a permanent drive mapping for this to work.  That PC will then become the DLNA server and -- so long as it is powered on -- it as well as other DLNA renderers on your network should be able to access your music library.

I just confirmed this by installing the component above and then on my Win 7 PC going to "Network" and clicking on "foobar2000 Media Server".  This launched Windows Media Player in which one of the sources now listed was that server.  Everything in my foobar2000 media library was then visible in WMP in its role as a DLNA renderer.  This means your UnitiQute should also be able to see it.  Whether and how you then use foobar2000 to remotely control the UnitiQute is something I'll need to let you figure out; I didn't see that capability*.  NAIM does offer a downloadable iOS app called n-Stream:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/n-stream/id381694252?mt=8

That and this may be a solution to your need:

*UPDATE: Ok, it may be there.  In foobar2000 main menu, go to "View" > "UPnP Controller".  A window will appear that has the option to "Select device".  I haven't gotten it to work yet, but maybe you can.

Thanks Ape's Brain

I have:
  • QNAP TS421 NAS which reboots nightly
  • Logitech Media Server + DLNA plugin installed on NAS
  • Naim UnitiLite which reads DLNA server on NAS
  • Naim nstream on iPad which controls NAS music on the UnitiLite and is working well using the above
  • Linn kinsky on laptop which find LMS+DLNA fine but plays only single songs at a time (outout on the UnitiLite)

I have installed foobar thinking that it might be an alternative to Kinsky and not stop after the first song. I have not been successful so far and may be misunderstanding the function/capability of foobar.

What I'm trying to do is control my hi-fi from my laptop by telling it which songs to play from the NAS DLNA server.

Now to respond to your points:

The DLNA plugin is working and has been for some time. Kinsky on PC finds it fine but I can't get kinsky to play more than a single song at a time so I'm trying other things. It is visible and browsable in foobar but I've not managed to play any songs from it

Anyway, you need to find a DLNA server -- like FreeNAS, ReadyDLNA, or Serviio -- that will install and run on your NAS.  It would help if you'd reply with your NAS brand and model so we can look into it.
I have QNAP 420 and it is running LMS+DLNA fine. I don't think the choice of DLNA server is an issue

I have set up  the media library to point to a mapped drive on the NAS.
I have media server and renderer both running on foobar
I can see the foobar server in Kinsky and play song on UnitiLite via the foobar server

foobar media library is visible in all devices outside foobar

Yes, I saw that but also couldn't get it to work

Try Serviio as well if you can install it on your NAS.

I can't see a version of serviio available for my nas and I can see lots of forum reports of problems. Is this server really stable? Are you recommending it? What are you running it on?
