MPEG Audio Collection 2.91 alpha 1

After Jurgen Faul, the creator of MAC, gave us his OK, we finally managed to get our things together and release a new version of MAC.
Not many changes in this version, it's mainly a release important for developers. We have created a SourceForge project for MAC, you can get the binary and sources there.

We hope we will get some feedback from users, so that we know what has to be worked on. So, please send us feature requests, bug reports etc.

The homepage http://j-faul.virtualave.net/ is not updated yet. We will probably redirect it to SourceForge when we have a new homepage ready. Till then please visit the MAC SourceForge project page:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac/

What's new:
- source is cleaned up a bit
- mpc support for SV 7.1 and all profiles
- XP Themes support

Btw.: Did you know that there is a cheat mode in MAC? Just press Ctrl+Shift+F1...

The cheat mode allows to edit folder/file names (the same as in Explorer).

Hi Gambit. I've not checked yet (won't be able to until sometime tonight, either...), but part of the original plan with the MAC3 series was to move the registry settings to an INI file. Is this still part of the to-do list, or has it already been implemented?

Another question here: It seems that it uses (yes i know 2.91 alpha) but there are already mac3 sources.
So why didn't U use them?

Gambit, this is truly appreciated! I sing along with all the other blessers
FLAC and aac/mp4 support would be the ultimate new feature to this excellent piece of software.

We decided to work on MAC2 first because there is still a lot of work to be done in MAC3. And we wanted to release something soon, so it was easier to modify MAC2.

In alpha2 there should be these new features:
- saving to ini
- fixed print bug
- aac, flac support
- reads ape tags in mp3

Hopefully out next week.

Oh, and btw. it is labeled as alpha, but is is not unstable or something. It should be safe to use. The alpha just means that it is being worked on and new features will be added.

Never heard of this program before now, but I like what I see.
Really looking forward to upcoming releases

Feature requests:
  • Specify the player to use for playback. (I want to use foobar2000 for playback, but I still want to keep Winamp as my default player in Windows. Hence this request.)
  • Another "Auto size" for colums, to resize colums to fit the info they contain.
  • Add/remove icons in the toolbar.
  • Change icons for volumes (not every volume is a CD)

Only some thoughts, add what you find useful, if any

Thank you very much, Gambit! I waited for this for so long! At least MAC will support APEv2 with mp3! I'm very happy.
And of course thank you Jurgen Faul for creating such a wonderful program!

A winamp plugin for MAC would be great... kinda like an alternative playlist with all the MAC features.
Something like this:

Very good work anyway. Thanks.

i.e. one should be able to right-click on a folder, and update only that folder, recursively.

Please ignore this request.  The only folders I wanted to do this with were "Artist" folders, and the solution is simply to create a separate volume for each artist.

Madrigal

Hi Gambit,

- "CD cover" feature, process the volume your working with, currently it only works with a selected root directory also a save function for it.

- MAC to display preset used (stored in lame tag) in LAME encoded files

- MAC to display replay gain analysis in mp3 files

- Update "mp3 encoder guessing" Encspot AFAIK has the most precise engine so I guess you could use this source code to update.

Also currently for reports If you choose 'Use guessed encoder as comment" (ctrl+r) MAC shows:
Type: MPC SV 7.0 BrainDead
Comment: MPEGplus

I think it should display:
Type: MPC
Comment: SV 7.0 BrainDead

Can anyone (Frank Klemm) give an idea on how to detect if -xlevel coding was used in mpc files?

AFAIK, one can only find out if --xlevel was used when it actually became active, i.e. when the encoder actually used it to prevent one of these internal clipping errors. There's no way to find out whether or not the user specified --xlevel if the option was not used by the encoder. (I hope you see what I mean, it sounds a little dodgy )

If you take a WAV file that doesn't provoke internal clipping errors (like 99% of all files you'll come across) and encode with and without xlevel, you will see that the MD5 sums of the created MPC files match. I assume from this that the encoder doesn't store any information about the --xlevel switch being used unless it was actually needed.

What's new:
- reads ape tags from mp3 files
- option to use foobar2000 for playing

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac/

Alpha2 comes with a delay and not all the promissed features are included.
I'm sorry for that, but the reason is simple: My computer died and I couldn't work on MAC. And I still haven't bought a new one. Plus, next week I'm going on vacation (can't remember the last time I've been on vacation...) for two weeks. When I get back I'll get myself a new machine, but untill then there probably won't be a new release in the next three weeks...
I'll talk to ErikS, maybe he will have time to release alpha3, when I'm away.

Till then... Enjoy the summer!
